Banks and credit unions are struggling to prove that their financial wellness initiatives actually improve customer outcomes. New research suggests shifting from "education-first" programs to a "financial lift" strategy that links measurable consumer improvement to institutional growth, offering a path to unlock billions in deposits and interchange revenue through data-driven product integration.

What was announced

Cornerstone Advisors released a report titled Monetizing the Mission: The Financial Lift Opportunity, commissioned by Bloom Credit. The research argues that traditional financial wellness programs, which often prioritize education, are largely ineffective; an analysis of more than 200 studies published in Management Science found that financial education interventions explained just 0.1% of financial behaviors. Instead, the report introduces the concept of "financial lift," defined as the measurable dollar value of improvement available to, or achieved by, a consumer across six categories: idle cash, debt costs, credit, fees, cash flow, and expenses.

The findings highlight a significant disconnect between institutional goals and consumer reality. While 95% of banks and credit unions provide consumers with access to credit scores, fewer than 5% offer tools designed to improve them. Consequently, 53% of credit union members report that their primary institution has no impact on their financial wellness. The report maintains that most institutions currently cannot connect wellness activity to deposit growth, loan conversion, or retention.

The research outlines a massive revenue opportunity for institutions that pivot toward measurable outcomes. Integrating credit reporting into checking accounts represents a $110 billion deposit opportunity and more than $1.5 billion in annual interchange revenue for the banking industry. Furthermore, the industry could generate over $1.6 billion by offering services such as subscription management, bill negotiation, and credit score management. The report also details a methodology for measuring results against non-enrolled comparison groups and recommends seven moves for executives, including product segmentation and embedded credit building.

What this means

This report signals a necessary end to the "wellness-washing" era of retail banking. For years, banks have used financial literacy content as a low-cost substitute for meaningful product innovation, but the data shows consumers are seeing through it. The pressure is now on legacy institutions to prove their value through the balance sheet rather than the blog post. As fintechs increasingly offer automated savings and credit-building tools as standard features, banks that fail to quantify their impact on customer wealth risk becoming mere utilities. The challenge for the sector is moving from passive observation of credit scores to active intervention in consumer financial health.
