Reimagining the CFO Role: Lucanet CFO Alistair Gurney on Data, Decision-Making, and AI-Driven Agility

Alistair Gurney, CFO at Lucanet, shares his journey from corporate finance at Deloitte to roles in private equity, and now back into the Office of the CFO. His route included a stint in marketing tech, which gave him a broader perspective before returning to his finance roots.

Gurney doesn’t believe the CFO role itself has changed dramatically, but acknowledges that the expectations on CFOs have grown significantly as CFOs are expected to weigh in on strategic decisions across the business. However, with improved access to data, CFOs more equipped than ever to do so. For example, Gurney explains how he can now have deeper, and more informed conversations with Lucanet’s CRO, discussing things like funnel mechanics and lead value, discussions that wouldn’t have been possible before data accessibility improved.

At Lucanet, Gurney sees the company as its own first customer and rely on their own platform to navigate uncertainty, remain flexible, and make smarter bets. For Gurney, uncertainty isn’t a reason to slow down, it’s a reason to act with more precision. He warns against over-optimism in forecasting, highlighting the importance of realism and understanding the low-level drivers behind performance, not just high-level metrics.

A key part of Gurney’s strategy is a strong grip on data at the most granular level. This kind of clarity, he argues, leads to better decision-making; whether it’s understanding individual lead sources or reducing forecasting cycles.

Looking ahead, Gurney is particularly excited about two major advances at Lucanet: the integration of a central data lake that supports analytics beyond traditional financials, as well as the rollout of agentic AI tools. These tools are already having a real impact, like cutting reforecasting time by a week which allows operational decisions to be made much faster. For Gurney and the team, this is about turning finance into a more strategic, less reactive function.
