STELLA CARD: Strengthening Europe’s Payment Sovereignty
The Europe payment sovereignty initiative is a groundbreaking project designed to enhance Europe’s independence from global payment giants like Visa and MasterCard. In this video, Guillaume Flies and Olivier Guiot discuss the launch of STELLA (Sovereign Technical European Initiative Leveraging Local Assets), which aims to offer European consumers and businesses the ability to use domestic payment schemes seamlessly across various countries. By supporting schemes like Bon Contact, Car Bancaire, Girocard, and Bancomat, the initiative seeks to empower Europeans with greater control over their payment systems while making transactions more cost-effective for both merchants and consumers.
A key aspect of the Europe payment sovereignty project is collaboration between various partners such as GPLUSD, a leader in card manufacturing, and other stakeholders in the domestic payment system ecosystem. Olivier Guiot from Giesecke+Devrient emphasizes the need for a unified approach that strengthens the connection between domestic and international payment systems. The initiative’s goal is to ensure that European consumers can use their domestic payment methods abroad, giving them more options and control. By collaborating with domestic card schemes and digital solution providers, STELLA is advancing Europe’s sovereignty in the payment sector.
Looking forward, the Europe payment sovereignty movement represents a major step toward reducing Europe’s reliance on global payment networks, enhancing resilience, and improving efficiency. The initiative invites various players, including card manufacturers and payment processors, to join in the effort.
