Quick Summary

In this episode of Horizon 2030 for Banking from Red Hat, Ivan Jennings, Automation Platform Lead for UKI and CENE, describes what he calls the nirvana state of self-healing infrastructure, the foundations it depends on, and the workforce questions it raises.

What Comes First?

Ivan returns to his earlier point that foundational hygiene is critical to enabling any of this. On that basis, he describes the ideal as self-healing infrastructure: the drudge of fixing and remediating issues is removed from people and handed to AI, while a person is kept in the loop, overseeing the challenges, fixes and CVEs so that they are remediated quickly and safely.

What Does He Say About the Next Few Years?

  • What things look like next year is a reasonable question; three or four years out, he says, who knows.
  • He notes that a recent vulnerability issue has exposed a massive challenge that all institutions will have to deal with, augmenting legacy processes and not just infrastructure and applications.

What About the Workforce?

Ivan raises what he calls a huge challenge around workforce shape. The people who have traditionally guarded these institutions from a technical perspective: what will they be doing in 2030? He says organisations need to look after them, make sure they are doing rewarding and challenging work, and recognise that having invested in them, they need to be part of the future as much as the technology is.
