About Oliver O’Brien

Oliver O’Brien is the Group Executive in charge of Strategy and Business Development at Mukuru, Africa’s largest remittances-focused fintech and an enabler of safe, affordable and reliable financial services to underserved communities. Prior to joining Mukuru, Oliver spent 3 years working in a Health-Tech non-profit, focusing on HIV education and treatment, where he ran the Marketing and Business Development functions.

Since 2013, Oliver has been at the helm of Mukuru’s growth strategy, accelerating the expansion of its business to serving over 200 remittance corridors, as well as providing additional financial services targeted at the financially under-served. With over 10 million migrant workers in the region, the work being done by the team at Mukuru empowers some of the hardest working people to support their loved ones back home in a secure, convenient, and affordable way. This work has contributed to Oliver’s passion for payment mechanisms, the concept of value, and the control structures thereof.

Away from the office Oliver is a travel addict, with ambitions to visit every country in the world. He also enjoys hiking off the beaten track, and the odd game of squash. Oliver holds a Bachelor of Business Science degree from UCT, and an MBA from the UCT Graduate School of Business.
