About John Stecher
John Stecher is the Chief Technology Officer of Blackstone. He is responsible for all aspects of technology across Blackstone, advises the firm’s investment teams and acts as a resource to portfolio companies on technology-related matters. John is focused on building cutting-edge technology and providing tools and advanced software platforms that drive productivity for Blackstone’s portfolio companies and employees.
John has had an extensive career in technology and engineering across industry sectors, with more than 20 years of experience as a recognized technology leader. Before joining Blackstone, John served as Chief Technology Officer and Chief Innovation Officer at Barclays, and he was also a member of Barclays Technology Management Committee. As Group Chief Technology Officer, he was responsible for leading the global team of technology experts across all business units at Barclays from its UK Retail Bank to its Global Markets business. As Group Chief Innovation Officer, he led Barclays’ innovation strategy across its many business units, working in alignment with the firm’s leadership team.
Prior to joining Barclays, John worked for Goldman Sachs where he held a variety of senior management and engineering roles across the firm’s Capital Markets and Technology divisions. He built their Marcus-branded consumer finance division – taking Marcus from initial concept and first line of code to the first customer loan booked within nine months. Before joining Goldman Sachs, John spent several years at IBM as a Senior Technical Staff Member. He was appointed as an IBM Master Inventor and led application development, architecture and strategy for IBM’s WebSphere product line in the Software group, where he delivered and created more than 45 patents across several diverse problem spaces.
John holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and a MS in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota.
