Jim Magats is a strategic and visionary Payments and Fintech Executive with 30 years of experience leading groundbreaking product, technology, and partnership teams that unlock omnichannel commerce globally. He spent 2 years as CEO of US open banking leader MX Technologies and 18 years helping PayPal become one of the world’s most valuable fintech companies. Additionally, he served 7 years as a management consultant helping both small and large companies leverage new global payments technologies, and 3 years as an auditor learning about the financial ins and outs of card issuers and payments.
He has a successful track record of growing customer product usage and top-line revenue, while improving operating margin and efficiencies by working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to deliver on complex, strategic, and cross-functional opportunities. He is well-versed in defining strategic product roadmaps, leading operational improvements, building high-performance teams, identifying business risks, devising mitigation strategies, strengthening compliance, and cultivating strategic partnerships. He possesses international experience, including 5 years living and working in Amsterdam/Luxembourg and supporting customers in China, India, Brazil, and Russia.
Jim is a former member of PayPal Inc’s 12-person Operating Group charged with meeting in-year strategic and financial targets. He is a regular external speaker and thought leader on innovation in the payments space and has served as a Council Member of the World Economic Forum for Financial Systems.
Jim Magats leads PayPal's Global Payment Product and Engineering team, which focuses on availability, experience and scalability of how customers pay and receive money from their PayPal wallet. As part of his responsibility, Jim looks after the financial institution and payment network partnerships that enable PayPal's payment functionality and allow current and potential customers to have greater access to funding options and more places to use PayPal online, in app and in store.
Jim has also worked in various capacities helping PayPal expand globally, including leading our European payments team, based in Luxembourg, from 2010 to 2013. Prior to his 15 years at PayPal, Jim worked for Ernst & Young Consulting and Arthur Andersen Audit helping issuers, retailers, and acquirers adopt to changing payments related technology, customer needs, and regulatory environments.
Outside of work, Jim lives in the SF Bay area, and loves watching all types of sports, especially those involving his two boys.
