David Barrett is the founder and CEO of Expensify, a leading expense management platform that has grown significantly under his leadership. With a background in computer engineering and a passion for using technology to solve real-world problems, Barrett has guided Expensify from its initial concept aimed at helping homeless individuals to its current position as a widely used preaccounting solution for both personal and business use. He’s recognized as one of the world’s top network engineers, having created Expensify’s blockchain-powered database a year before Satoshi’s white paper on Bitcoin. Prior to Expensify, David led engineering for Red Swoosh — which was acquired by Akamai Technologies in 2007. David Barrett, an American entrepreneur and software engineer, is best known as the founder and CEO of Expensify, a leading expense management platform.  Prior to founding Expensify in 2008, Barrett worked in the video game industry, developing 3D graphics engines, and later joined Red Swoosh, a peer-to-peer file sharing company co-founded by Travis Kalanick. Under Barrett's leadership, Expensify has grown into a widely used preaccounting platform, recognized for its innovative technology and commitment to social causes. His vision for the company includes innovation, global expansion, and creating user-friendly financial solutions for businesses and individuals worldwide. David Barrett received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) degree in Computer Engineering from the prestigious University of Michigan. He pursued his studies between May 1994 and May 1998, laying a strong foundation in computer engineering that would later contribute to his success as an entrepreneur and software engineer in the technology industry. When he’s not fearlessly leading Team Expensify from Portland, He enjoys playing Minecraft with his daughter.
