Clearstream Unveils Next-Generation Digital Securities Infrastructure
Clearstream, Deutsche Börse Group’s post-trade business, unveils a next-generation digital securities infrastructure for both traditional and tokenized securities markets.
This will create a digital-first and fully hybrid platform that handles both traditional and digital securities. Market participants will be able to hold and combine traditional securities, digital securities and cash varieties in one portfolio. Clients will have institutional-grade access to blockchain technology and crypto assets, including stablecoins and other securities tokens. It will open up new business opportunities and efficiencies for capital market players worldwide.
The digital securities infrastructure will launch in stages, with the main components going live across 2026 and 2027. Subject to regulatory approval, it will cover the entire securities lifecycle, from issuance, distribution, settlement and custody, through to asset servicing, liquidity and financing. It will serve Clearstream’s clients across both traditional and digital financial markets, regardless of the technology, asset type or money type involved, for all assets regulated under the EU’s MiFID and MiCA legislative frameworks.
Clearstream is developing the platform together with market partners and clients, to deliver practical use cases for the whole market. This includes large-scale tokenization of securities, settlement directly on blockchain, and reusing the same assets as collateral across multiple transactions.
Stephanie Eckermann, member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Börse Group, responsible for Post-Trading and Clearstream’s Chairwoman, said: “Clearstream is unveiling the next generation of financial market infrastructure and Europe’s first digital securities infrastructure serving clients globally. We are proud to lead this transformation, connecting investors and issuers to bring investment flows where they are needed. With this step, we are re-shaping the post-trading landscape and creating the perfect infrastructure for both traditional and tokenized assets to equip the market for a future of digital finance.”
The initiative builds on Clearstream’s track record of delivering large-scale digital solutions, including its D7 platform, MiCA-compliant crypto custody, and digital financing and automated investor communication services. This is alongside its long-standing expertise in running institutional financial market infrastructure globally.
Centered in Europe, Clearstream issues more than 5 million securities a year, holds EUR 22 trillion in assets under custody and connects 60 markets worldwide. Its digital securities infrastructure will support the EU’s Savings & Investments Union, making investment flows simpler and stronger across Europe and worldwide
