Tirana Bank Introduces the New Digital Era With Backbase

WHY THIS MATTERS: The successful completion of Tirana Bank’s full retail digital overhaul in just twelve months is a significant milestone that extends far beyond the Albanian market. This is a powerful demonstration of how modern, platform-based architecture—specifically an AI-native Banking OS—is now the definitive blueprint for regional core modernization. By deploying a comprehensive suite of services, from end-to-end digital lending to personal finance management (PFM) insights, Tirana Bank instantly leapfrogs much of its local competition. This speed of deployment validates the shift away from legacy, monolithic systems, showing that banks can now achieve deep digital transformation without the typical multi-year timeline. Crucially, as Albania aligns itself with European Union standards, this move sets a high bar for customer experience, signaling a broader wave of regional digitalization across the Balkans, driven by vendor platforms that offer speed, scale, and feature richness out of the box.

Tirana Bank announces the successful go-live of a complete omnichannel retail banking experience. Built on the Backbase AI-native Banking OS and delivered in 12 months, the launch gives customers consistent digital experiences across mobile and web. The platform runs cloud-native on Microsoft Azure, with business banking set to follow before year-end.

This go-live marks a major milestone in Tirana Bank’s journey to deliver great digital experiences for its customers. The release covers accounts, deposits, end-to-end online loan applications, end-to-end online credit card application, internal and outgoing transfers, card management, bill payments and financial insights, in addition to Digital Assist in the employee app.

Retail customers can apply for credit cards, take out consumer loans, and manage multi-currency accounts across Albanian lek and euro using a single app, without the need to visit a branch. The bank aims that customers will need to visit a branch only for limited financial advisory.

Backbase’s personal finance management capabilities also give customers real-time spending insights, something that remains rare in the region. Additionally, Tirana Bank launched Apple Pay as part of the roll out, becoming one of the first banks in Albania to offer the service seamlessly through its mobile app.

References from comparable Backbase deployments in the region – with DSK Bank in Bulgaria and Eurobank Limited in Cyprus – gave Tirana Bank confidence in Backbase’s ability to deliver at pace and at scale. They saw in the AI-native Banking OS a proven way to go to a comprehensive, cloud-native banking experience without starting from scratch. The implementation was delivered in partnership with Endava, a certified Backbase delivery partner.

“Albania is on its path to EU membership, its government has made digitalization a national priority. Tirana Bank looked at that moment and decided to lead it. They came to us with a clear ambition. Twelve months later, they are live with not only MVP but a full Retail APP. This is a first for Albania, and a reference for the Balkans. For Backbase, it confirms that the Banking OS gives regional banks a genuine speed advantage – so their teams spend time building what differentiates them, not rebuilding what’s already there.”  Robert Mihaljek, Regional Vice President, South East Europe at Backbase.

“This launch marks a significant step in our digital transformation journey, as we continue to invest in solutions that bring real, everyday value to our customers. TiBank+ is designed to deliver a seamless and intuitive banking experience, combining convenience with the trust and human connection that define our model. Through our partnership with Backbase, we have accelerated this transformation, bringing to market a modern and scalable platform built to evolve with our customers’ needs. This collaboration reflects our ambition to lead with innovation while staying focused on what matters most: creating banking experiences that fit naturally into our customers’ everyday lives.” Lila Canaj Chief Retail Business Officer at Tirana Bank.

FF NEWS TAKE: This move absolutely moves the needle for the region, transforming Tirana Bank into a major digital leader overnight. The full-stack launch proves that platform banking can deliver true omnichannel banking faster than previously imagined. We must now watch for the immediate impact on customer acquisition and how effectively the upcoming business banking platform integrates. The true measure of success will be whether this efficiency translates into market share gains and a sustained shift in customer behavior away from the branch network.
