U.S. Faster Payments Council Releases Latest State of Play in U.S. Faster Payments Report

The U.S. Faster Payments Council (FPC), a membership organization devoted to advancing safe, easy-to-use faster payments in the United States, today released the 2025 edition of its State of Play in U.S. Faster Payments report. Developed by the FPC Network Committee, the report is now available for download in the FPC’s Faster Payments Knowledge Center.

The new State of Play report provides a comprehensive update on the market for instant and immediate payments services in the United States, with a focus on the various underlying payment networks. The 2025 edition includes detailed profiles of 10 networks and highlights their features, capabilities, and unique characteristics.

“Bringing together a complete view of the U.S. faster payments networks is an important step in supporting adoption and innovation,” said Jim Colassano, SVP, RTP Business Product Management at The Clearing House and Chair of the FPC Network Committee. “This report demonstrates how the networks complement one another and provide the industry with a wide range of options to deliver faster payments to end users.”

The State of Play in U.S. Faster Payments report outlines the ways faster payments are being used today, from disbursements and payroll to bill payments and person-to-person transfers. It also examines key elements of network design such as settlement mechanisms, message standards, routing, and fraud mitigation measures. By comparing these features side by side, the report offers a resource for organizations evaluating faster payments solutions.

The profiles featured in the report represent both core clearing and settlement networks as well as value-added networks built on top of existing payments infrastructure. Networks included in the 2025 report are Accel, FedNow® Service, Juniper OnWe®, Mastercard Send, Open Payment Network®, RTP® Network, SHAZAM, STAR, Visa Direct, and Zelle®.

“The faster payments landscape continues to expand as networks scale, new use cases emerge, and adoption increases across consumer and business markets,” said Reed Luhtanen, FPC Executive Director and CEO. “This updated report equips financial institutions and payment providers with a clear view of today’s network environment and supports the industry’s efforts to advance faster payments in the United States.”

The FPC will continue to update the State of Play report periodically to ensure the industry has access to the most current information on the evolving faster payments landscape.
