Apple launches Tap to Pay on iPhone in France

Apple has announced that businesses based in France can now accept in-person and contactless payments via Tap to Pay on iPhone. This new feature will enable millions of merchants, from small businesses to large retailers, to seamlessly and securely accept payments from contactless bank cards , Apple Pay and others digital wallets using just their iPhone and a partner’s iOS app – no additional hardware or payment terminal required.

The Tap to Pay service on iPhone is available to payment platforms and app developers in France, who can integrate it into their iOS apps and offer it as a payment acceptance option to their business customers. The BPCE Group (Banques Populaires, Caisses d’Epargne and Payplug) and the companies Adyen, myPOS, Revolut, SumUp, Viva Wallet and Worldline now offer Tap to Pay on iPhone to their French professional customers, and they will soon be joined by BNP Paribas , Crédit Coopératif, Market Pay, Stancer and Stripe.

Tap to Pay on iPhone is available in all Apple Stores in France, and being deployed in numerous points of sale, notably those of the Christian Dior Couture brands, belonging to the LVMH group, Dyson, Rituals and Sézane. L’Addition has integrated Tap to Pay on iPhone into its POS system used by thousands of restaurants in France. Sephora, which also belongs to the LVMH group, will deploy Tap to Pay on iPhone in the coming weeks in its stores in France.

With Tap to Pay on iPhone, merchants can enable contactless payment acceptance through a supported iOS app on an iPhone X S (or later) running the latest version of iOS. When paying, the merchant will simply invite the customer to bring their contactless bank card, iPhone or Apple

Watch close to their own iPhone in order to pay with Apple Pay or another digital wallet. Payment will be made securely using NFC 2 technology . No additional hardware is required to accept contactless payments via Tap to Pay on iPhone, allowing businesses based in France to use the service regardless of where they operate. Apple Pay is already accepted by more than 98% of French distributors and, thanks to this new functionality, virtually all businesses, regardless of their size, will be able to use Tap to Pay on iPhone when paying.

Privacy is fundamental to the design and development of all of Apple’s payment features. With Tap to Pay on iPhone, customer payment data is protected by the same technology that keeps Apple Pay private and secure. All transactions made via Tap to Pay on iPhone are encrypted and processed using the Secure Element, and as with Apple Pay, Apple has no information about what is being purchased or who made the purchase.

Apple is working closely with leading payment platforms and app developers in the payments and commerce industry to bring Tap to Pay on iPhone in France. Tap to Pay on iPhone complements and enhances the range of payments and commerce tools that payment platforms and app developers make available to their merchant customers to help them manage and grow their business . Tap to Pay on iPhone will be compatible with contactless bank cards from major payment networks, including American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa. Apple is working with payment platforms to enable support, in the coming weeks, for CB (Cartes Bancaires), the most used payment scheme on the French market.
