Dutch Insurtech Surebird Closes €1.165 Million Seed Round to Launch Insurance Wallet

Surebird has closed a €1.165 million seed round to support the launch of its digital insurance wallet. The Surebird seed round will help develop its platform to simplify how customers manage insurance policies.

The investment comes from Quantum Leap Capital, Dutch Operator Fund and Bright Business.. In addition, former Independer CEO Coen de Ruiter will join as chairman of the advisory board. Surebird previously received investments from EIT Digital, Europe’s largest digital innovation ecosystem, and a group of loyal angel investors.

Surebird offers consumers a central, digital platform where all their insurance policies are automatically monitored. The platform detects when a policy no longer fits the user’s personal situation and provides smart, independent recommendations to reduce costs or improve coverage. This goes beyond traditional comparison sites, which mainly focus on one-off insurance purchases.

The startup was part of the 2022 EIT Digital Open Innovation Factory, where it developed its one-stop digital insurance system.

With the new funding, Surebird aims to accelerate the development of its platform. Several key features are on the roadmap, including a broader range of health and pet insurance options, an improved user experience, faster claims handling, and more personalized recommendations for existing customers. These enhancements align with the company’s ambition to become the market leader in digital and independent insurance advice.

That ambition responds to a widespread issue: many people forget to regularly review or update their insurance. As a result, they often overpay or are left with coverage that no longer matches their needs. Research by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) also shows that loyal customers often pay more for property and casualty insurance than new customers with similar profiles. Meanwhile, premiums continue to rise: average car insurance went up by 10.7%, and home insurance by 15%. Factors like inflation, extreme weather, and large price differences between providers highlight the importance of active, up-to-date insurance management.

“We’re very excited about the investment in Surebird,” says Jeroen Bertrams, angel investor at Dutch Operator Fund. “Surebird’s insurtech platform clearly solves a consumer problem by simplifying and optimizing insurance management. Their scalable model and strong team align perfectly with our investment strategy. We look forward to supporting their continued growth and success in the Dutch market.”

Bart van Went, Co-Founder at Bright Business, adds: “The insurance market is in dire need of innovation. Surebird offers a scalable, digital model that truly helps consumers gain control over their insurance. No more forgotten policies in a drawer, just a platform that thinks along and looks ahead. This perfectly fits our vision of customer-driven innovation.”
Mike de Boer, Co-Founder at Quantum Leap Capital, states: “We see tremendous potential in Surebird. The platform combines innovative technology with a practical solution for consumers. The team’s vision and the way they empower consumers to regain control over their insurance is impressive. That’s why we’re proud to support Surebird not just financially, but also with our expertise and network during this critical growth phase.”

Former Independer CEO Joins Advisory Board
The appointment of Coen de Ruiter underscores Surebird’s growth potential. As former CEO of Independer, he helped bring comparison platforms into the mainstream and has deep knowledge of the insurance market, digital strategy, and consumer behavior. His involvement reflects confidence in Surebird’s direction and provides a strategic boost for the next phase of growth.

“I strongly believe in Surebird’s mission to make the insurance market more transparent and consumer-friendly,” says Coen de Ruiter. “As former CEO of Independer, I’ve seen how essential it is to empower consumers with the right tools and information. Surebird takes this a step further by continuously optimizing and aligning with the user’s life stage. I look forward to contributing as chairman of the advisory board and helping Surebird realize its ambitious goals and become a dominant player in digital insurance advice.”

Taco van Wachem, founder of Surebird, says: “Many people don’t look at their insurance for years, even though their lives change in the meantime. That passivity costs them money and security. With Surebird, we want to make insurance understandable again and give people back control—without the hassle. This investment enables us to accelerate the development of a platform that doesn’t just compare, but truly evolves with your life. Whether you move in together, have a child, or switch jobs—Surebird ensures your insurance stays up to date automatically, without you having to chase it.”

With this funding, the Surebird seed round aims to enable a more user-friendly approach to digital insurance management.
