Bittimaatti Opens the World’s Most Northern Cryptocurrency ATM in Finnish Lapland

Bittimaatti, a subsidiary of Finnish cryptocurrency service provider Coinmotion, has opened the world’s northernmost cryptocurrency ATM inside Poronportti, near the skiing center Levi in Kittilä, Finland. With its Bittimaatti machines, bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can be converted into cash. It’s also possible to buy crypto with the machines.

200km north of the Arctic Circle, Kittilä and the surrounding area have become a very popular holiday destination, especially in the winter, thanks to the world-famous skiing resort at nearby Levi. Bittimaatti wants to provide greater financial freedom to travellers, who often use cash to fund their vacations.

“Tourists often rely on cash for their trips, and many of them don’t want to use a credit card when they run out of money. By opening up a crypto ATM, we’re providing an easy and convenient alternative for travellers to get local currency without relying on traditional banks and exchanges,” says Bittimaati CEO Johan Moilanen.

As the tourism industry recovers after the pandemic, and tour operators such as TUI and Thomas Cook making moves towards the winter wonderland that is Levi, the need for decentralized finance options has risen significantly. In fact, according to Coin ATM Radar, there are already nearly 40,000 cryptocurrency ATMs in the world. Levi’s ATM stands out as the world’s most northern crypto ATM.

Many of Levi’s tourists come from outside of the Eurozone – which mean that need to go through traditional banks and costly foreign exchanges to get local currency. Bittimaatti’s ATMs provide alternative utility for those that prefer to use their crypto instead of credit cards. Brits are one of Levi’s most popular tourist groups, where more than four million people own cryptocurrencies.

To be able to use Bittimaatti ATMs, you need to open an account at coinmotion.comBittimaatti ATMs can be used by citizens that have bank accounts in following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden, the 3 EEA countries of Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, and also Switzerland, Monaco, and the UK.
