Uber's Adaptable APAC Strategy | Pay It Forward with Uber
By Lauren Towner · 3 May 2024

How do Uber maintain the same level of service in different regions?
In this conversation from the Pay it Forward podcast with payabl. we spoke to Rema Rao, Head of Strategy and Planning at Uber, to find out how they balance a focused global approach with adapting to the array of local payment methods on offer in Asia Pacific.
Rao lets us know how they differentiate themselves in an increasingly crowded market and gives us an inside look on how they approach the region.
The ride hailing titan will be no stranger to anyone although they haven’t always had it easy here, going head to head with a host of well established competitors who often take the form of a super app offering multiple services, although not always with great results.
Their approach to rapid expansion around the world, also hasn’t been popular with everyone. Even today they face significant opposition in one of the biggest cities in the world. However, you can’t argue with the numbers. They reported $37.2 billion revenue in 2023 and they continue to grow through acquisition and the popularity of their food ordering vertical, Uber Eats.
We were keen to find out what their approach is in the enormous APAC market and how they deal with the consumer demands there.
Alternative Payment Methods Reign Supreme
Rao, who oversees payments and financial products for Uber in the Asia-Pacific region, sheds light on the challenges faced by a global marketplace like Uber. There is understandably a need to balance the priorities of a globally unified product with the nuanced and fragmented nature of local markets, particularly in this region, with varying regulations and ways of paying. The conversation with Doug Mackenzie delves into Uber's approach to differentiation, highlighting the importance of sticking to their core business model while prioritizing a seamless user experience. It’s hard to deny that they have a singular focus. Rao also emphasizes Uber's commitment to understanding user behavior and preferences to create a magical experience for users, citing examples such as facilitating seamless travel and easily integrating different forms of payment. The conversation goes on to touch on Uber's expansion into other adjacent verticals, including Uber Eats and Lime scooters, and how they adapt to the growing popularity of different ways of paying. She discusses Uber's strategy of incorporating local payment methods like PayPay in Japan and tailoring payment options based on user preferences to enhance the overall experience. Not only that but there’s also discussion here on the importance of sustainability, and wanting to reduce emissions, something they have talked about before as a company. They have initiatives of course, such as the ‘One Less Car’ trial in Australia, but will this be enough? Find out this and much more in the conversation above.Companies in this story: payabl.
