Token Summit IV Returns to New York on May 16th

Token Summit IV returns to New York City on May 16, 2019, to address the evolving economics and regulatory landscape of the blockchain industry. For fintech professionals, the event serves as a critical junction where institutional regulation meets decentralized innovation, focusing on long-term fundamentals despite recent volatility in cryptocurrency market prices.

What was announced

The fourth iteration of the summit, organized by author and investor William Mougayar and 1confirmation founder Nick Tomaino, will take place at the 787 Seventh Auditorium in the AXA Equitable Center. The program is designed to cover the development, regulation, and best practices of blockchain-based tokens and protocols. Key sessions include a fireside chat with former CFTC Chairman Timothy Massad regarding his recent Brookings report on crypto-asset regulation, and a special address by US Congressman Darren Soto on the newly re-introduced Token Taxonomy Act.

The event expects approximately 45 speakers, including Fred Wilson of USV, Muneeb Ali of Blockstack, and representatives from the Ethereum Foundation and MakerDAO. Discussions will pivot around the measurement of decentralization, the rise of Decentralized Finance (DeFi), and the evolution of stablecoins. A notable technical integration for the event involves the sale of VIP "cryptotickets" on OpenSea. These tickets are unique digital assets on the Ethereum blockchain, with ten featuring mystery items for an upcoming game from Dapper Labs. The summit is held in coordination with the New York City Economic Development Corporation as part of the second annual Blockchain Week NYC activities.

"While public sentiment and cryptocurrency prices are down significantly from last year, the underlying fundamentals are stronger than ever. We’re excited to bring together leading entrepreneurs, developers, regulators, experts, and investors from around the world to share their insights, and discuss the important technological, economic, governance and opportunities the blockchain industry is facing"

The companies involved

The summit is led by William Mougayar, a blockchain author and investor, alongside Nick Tomaino, the founder of 1confirmation. The event's roster of sponsors includes Blockstack, which is currently navigating a Reg A SEC filing, and Bloq, a provider of enterprise-grade blockchain solutions. Legal expertise is represented by the firm Cooley, while the decentralized commerce sector is represented by OB1, the team behind the OpenBazaar marketplace.

Dapper Labs, another key participant and sponsor, is recognized as the creator of CryptoKitties, one of the earliest successful consumer-facing applications on the blockchain. OpenSea, the marketplace hosting the event's digital tickets, operates as a platform for buying and selling non-fungible tokens. This collective of sponsors represents a cross-section of the infrastructure, legal, and consumer-facing segments of the current blockchain market, reflecting the summit's aim to bridge different "tribes" within the industry. By bringing these entities together in coordination with the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the organizers aim to foster a collaborative environment for an industry often characterized by fragmented interests.

What this means

The focus on "underlying fundamentals" suggests a pivot away from retail-driven hype toward institutional-grade infrastructure. The presence of former CFTC leadership and sitting Congressmen indicates that the industry is no longer operating in a vacuum; it is actively seeking to influence the legislative frameworks that will define its next decade. For the broader fintech sector, the question is no longer if blockchain will integrate with traditional finance, but how quickly decentralized models will begin to challenge centralized incumbents. The emphasis on DeFi as a direct competitor to traditional fintech puts established payment processors and banks on notice, as the sector moves toward automated, protocol-based financial services.
