Vancity, Canada’s largest credit union, has selected Temenos SaaS to modernize its core banking infrastructure. By moving to a cloud-native platform on Microsoft Azure, the institution aims to streamline retail and corporate operations for over 588,000 members. This shift highlights the growing momentum of SaaS-based core migrations among major North American financial institutions seeking operational agility.

What was announced

Vancity is embarking on a comprehensive digital transformation by adopting the Temenos SaaS platform. The credit union, which manages CAD $42.4 billion in assets and serves more than three million accounts, will utilize a "build-and-migrate" strategy. This phased approach is designed to introduce new digital banking capabilities while progressively updating existing operations, ensuring business continuity and protecting member services throughout the transition.

The modernization program covers Vancity’s primary business lines, including retail deposits, retail lending, payments, and corporate banking. To support these functions, the institution will deploy a suite of products comprising Temenos Core, the Temenos Payments Hub, and the Temenos Data Hub. By running these systems on Microsoft Azure, Vancity intends to create a more resilient and scalable foundation for its technology stack.

The move to a SaaS model is also intended to simplify the management of Vancity’s core banking technology. Beyond operational efficiency, the transition aligns with the credit union’s ESG commitments by utilizing a more efficient technology environment. This implementation represents a significant cloud migration for a member-owned financial institution of this scale in the Canadian market.

"Banking is changing, and the technology behind it needs to change too. Moving to Temenos SaaS represents a deliberate shift toward a simpler, more scalable technology foundation that can continuously evolve, allowing Vancity to innovate faster and respond to our members’ changing needs. It means we can spend less time managing complexity and more time investing in better banking experiences for our members."

Wendy Murphy, Chief Technology Officer, Vancity.

The companies involved

Vancity is Canada’s largest credit union and stands as one of the most prominent member-owned financial institutions in the country. Headquartered in British Columbia, it provides a wide range of financial services to more than half a million members. As a member-owned entity, its focus remains on community-led banking and sustainable financial practices, a position reflected in its significant asset base of over $42 billion.

Temenos (SIX: TEMN) is a global leader in the banking software sector, providing technology solutions to thousands of financial institutions worldwide. The company specializes in cloud-native, cloud-agnostic, and AI-driven software for retail, corporate, and private banking. With a massive footprint in the industry, Temenos has established itself as a primary provider for institutions looking to move away from legacy on-premise systems toward more flexible SaaS environments. Its North American operations, led by President Brian DuVal, have increasingly focused on helping established banks and credit unions navigate the complexities of cloud migration while maintaining the breadth of their existing business operations.

What FF News has reported before

Temenos has maintained a consistent presence in the digital transformation space, recently earning industry recognition alongside Hamilton Reserve Bank. The two organizations were named a Temenos and Hamilton Reserve Bank Win 2026 IDC Award for Digital Onboarding Excellence. The company has also seen success in the North American credit union sector, with Sound Credit Union Partners with Temenos to Modernize Collections via SaaS.

Further expanding its ecosystem, the company integrated Prove Pre-Fill® Now Available on Temenos Exchange, Delivering Seamless Onboarding to Banks Worldwide. FF News has also highlighted research suggesting European Banks Risk Losing 75% of Customers Over AI and Personalization Gaps, a pressure increasingly felt by legacy institutions globally.

What this means

The decision by Canada’s largest credit union to adopt a SaaS-first core banking model is a clear signal that the "wait and see" era of cloud adoption for major North American institutions is ending. For years, the complexity of migrating millions of accounts across diverse business lines acted as a barrier to entry. However, the "build-and-migrate" strategy employed here suggests a maturing market where risk mitigation is now balanced with the urgent need for agility. This move puts significant pressure on domestic competitors still tethered to legacy on-premise systems, raising questions about how quickly other large-scale member-owned institutions must follow suit to remain competitive in a digital-first landscape.
