SoFi Technologies has launched SoFi Earn (SOFIE), the first national bank-issued tokenized deposit for retail consumers. By offering a 4.40% APY on digital dollars with FDIC insurance, the fintech giant is bridging the gap between traditional banking protections and the high-velocity utility of the blockchain ecosystem for its members.

What was announced

SoFi Earn allows members to earn interest on digital assets while maintaining liquidity for immediate crypto transactions. Each SOFIE token represents $1 held on deposit at SoFi Bank. The product offers a 4.40% APY and includes FDIC insurance up to applicable limits, addressing a major pain point in the stablecoin market where funds often sit idle without yield or federal protection. Users can convert SOFIE 1:1 to SoFiUSD, the bank’s existing stablecoin, to purchase cryptocurrencies within the SoFi app or move funds across blockchain rails 24/7.

This launch marks SoFi’s fifth crypto-related offering in less than twelve months. It follows the December 2025 debut of SoFiUSD (SOFID), which was the first stablecoin issued by a U.S. national bank. The company cited Federal Reserve research indicating that roughly $64 billion, or 21.2% of the stablecoin market, currently sits in inactive or forgotten wallets, representing significant lost earning potential for holders. SoFi Earn is currently rolling out to SoFi Crypto members, with full availability expected by the end of November 2026.

The companies involved

SoFi Technologies, Inc., which trades on the NASDAQ under the ticker SOFI, positions itself as an "everything app" for digital financial services. Based in San Francisco, the company has evolved from a student loan refinancing specialist into a full-service digital bank and fintech powerhouse. Its subsidiary, SoFi Bank, operates as a U.S. national bank, a status that allows it to issue tokenized products like SOFIE and SOFID with regulatory oversight and FDIC insurance—a significant differentiator from non-bank stablecoin issuers. The firm has aggressively expanded its product suite to include investment tools, credit cards, and insurance, alongside its core lending and banking operations. By integrating blockchain technology directly into its banking infrastructure, SoFi is attempting to modernize traditional money movement. The company’s recent moves suggest a strategy of embedding digital asset utility within a regulated framework, leveraging its national bank charter to provide a level of security that native crypto platforms often struggle to match in the eyes of mainstream consumers.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked SoFi’s expansion into blockchain-integrated banking. In September 2026, we reported that SoFi Bank Scales Stablecoin Settlement to $25B via Mastercard Network, highlighting how the bank uses its SoFiUSD stablecoin to settle its entire card program. Earlier in the year, the company diversified its investment offerings with the launch of the SoFi Launches Social 50 Income ETF (SFYI) Combining Member Sentiment with Active Options, which utilizes member sentiment and active options strategies. Additionally, the firm’s influence on the broader fintech talent pool was noted when Marqeta Appoints Former Intuit and SoFi Executive Eugenia Gibbons as Chief Product Officer in August 2026.

What this means

This move places significant pressure on non-bank stablecoin issuers who cannot offer FDIC insurance or direct interest on deposits without navigating complex regulatory hurdles. By tokenizing the deposit itself rather than just issuing a traditional stablecoin, SoFi is effectively merging the yield-bearing nature of a savings account with the transactional speed of decentralized finance. The industry must now grapple with whether "regulated crypto" will become the standard for retail adoption. If a national bank can successfully scale 24/7 on-chain settlement with federal protections, the value proposition for offshore or uncollateralized stablecoins diminishes rapidly for the average user.
