Ripple and Coinbase have partnered to integrate the Ripple USD (RLUSD) stablecoin across Coinbase’s retail and institutional platforms. This move significantly broadens the distribution of Ripple’s regulated stablecoin, providing fintech firms and institutional investors with a compliant bridge between traditional fiat and digital asset ecosystems for execution, settlement, and custody services.

What was announced

The partnership brings Ripple USD (RLUSD) to Coinbase’s core infrastructure, allowing both retail and institutional clients to trade and manage the asset starting today. The integration includes support for 1:1 conversions from U.S. dollars and other supported USD-denominated stablecoins. Beyond the primary U.S. platforms—Coinbase Prime, Coinbase Exchange, and the Coinbase Retail app—the companies confirmed that RLUSD will later be available to Coinbase Global Exchange customers, where it can be leveraged as collateral.

To facilitate cross-chain utility, the stablecoin supports deposits and withdrawals across the XRPL, Base, and Ethereum networks. Ripple has also committed to providing liquidity on Base to support the asset’s growth within that ecosystem. Since its launch in December 2024, RLUSD has reached a market capitalization of $2.4 billion, driven by adoption across exchanges, payments, and onchain finance.

As a regulated, enterprise-grade stablecoin, RLUSD is designed for institutional use cases including spot trading, prime brokerage, derivatives, and decentralized finance (DeFi). The asset is fully redeemable for U.S. dollars and is backed by a reserve of U.S. dollar deposits, short-term U.S. Treasuries, and other cash equivalents. This structure is intended to provide the transparency and trust required for regulated financial operations, with Ripple utilizing its existing suite of over 85 licenses to underpin the offering.

"Institutional appetite for compliant, high-quality stablecoins is clear. The challenge is making them readily available through the platforms institutions already trust and use,"

The companies involved

Founded in 2012, Ripple is a provider of blockchain-based financial solutions that holds over 85 licenses globally. The company operates as a central entry point for enterprises seeking payments, custody, prime brokerage, and treasury management services. Its ecosystem is underpinned by the digital asset XRP and its newer stablecoin, RLUSD, which serve as bridges between traditional financial systems and digital markets. Ripple’s focus remains on providing regulated infrastructure for the global financial system.

Coinbase, listed on the NASDAQ as COIN, is a major digital asset platform that stores more digital assets than any other company globally. The firm is currently building what it describes as an "everything exchange," a single venue providing access to crypto, equities, derivatives, and prediction markets. By integrating diverse asset classes and maintaining a focus on security and compliance, Coinbase aims to increase global economic freedom. The company’s institutional arm, Coinbase Institutional, provides the execution and settlement services that major financial entities rely on for digital asset exposure.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked the rapid expansion of Ripple’s stablecoin ecosystem and its integration with major market players. Recently, the publication covered how Ripple and Robinhood Partner to Integrate RLUSD Stablecoin and Automate Global Treasury Operations, a move that similarly targeted retail and treasury efficiency. Additionally, the firm’s institutional push was highlighted when Ripple and BNY Expand Digital Asset Alliance to Modernize Tokenized Trade Finance.

Coinbase has also been active in the payments space, as seen when Thunes and Coinbase Partner to Bridge Fiat and Stablecoin Global Payments. These developments underscore a broader trend of major crypto-native firms aligning with traditional financial rails to provide more robust, regulated payment options for a global audience.

What this means

This partnership signals a direct challenge to the dominance of established stablecoins like USDC and USDT within the institutional sector. By securing a listing on Coinbase, Ripple is ensuring that RLUSD is not just a niche treasury tool but a primary liquidity vehicle. The inclusion of the Base network is particularly telling; it suggests that the battle for stablecoin supremacy is moving toward Layer 2 ecosystems where transaction costs are lower and DeFi activity is concentrated. For the wider industry, this raises questions about how many "regulated" stablecoins the market can support before liquidity becomes too fragmented. Competitors will likely feel the pressure to match Ripple’s aggressive licensing and partnership strategy to maintain their institutional appeal.
