Qonto has appointed former PayPal executive Anja Urlichs as Vice President Upmarket to spearhead its strategy for established and fast-growing SMEs. This move signals a shift in focus for the European fintech leader, moving beyond the freelancer and micro-business segment to capture the more complex financial needs of scaling enterprises across the continent.

What was announced

The appointment of Anja Urlichs as VP Upmarket marks a strategic pivot for Qonto as it targets businesses that have outgrown basic banking services. Based in Berlin, Urlichs is tasked with unifying Qonto’s Product, Marketing, Sales, Customer Success, and Operations departments to create a cohesive commercial strategy for this "upmarket" segment. These are defined as businesses requiring more sophisticated financial tools, such as advanced spend management and complex bookkeeping, as they scale their operations.

Urlichs brings over two decades of experience to the role, having spent 23 years at PayPal. Her most recent position was SMB Marketing Lead for International Markets, and she previously served as Chief Marketing Officer for PayPal DACH. Her background includes leading commercial transformations and launching new markets across Europe, expertise that Qonto intends to leverage as it expands its footprint.

Qonto currently serves more than 750,000 SMEs and freelancers across eight European countries. By focusing on established businesses, the company aims to address the needs of customers who have grown alongside the platform since its 2017 launch. The strategy involves evolving the core product—which currently combines business banking with invoicing and spend management—to handle the increased complexity, headcount, and process requirements of larger SMEs.

"Qonto built something exceptional for entrepreneurs and young businesses from day one. Many of those businesses have since grown, adding more people, processes and complexity. Our opportunity is to evolve with them while opening Qonto to more established businesses across Europe. Our ambition is not simply to win customers, but to continue earning their trust as their needs evolve. That is the challenge I joined Qonto for,"

The companies involved

Qonto is a prominent player in the European business finance management sector, positioned as a comprehensive alternative to traditional corporate banking. Founded in 2017 by Alexandre Prot, who serves as Co-Founder and CEO, and Steve Anavi, Co-Founder, the company has grown from a French startup into a multi-national fintech with a presence in eight markets. The firm has secured more than €600 million in funding to date, supporting a workforce of over 1,700 employees.

The platform’s core offering integrates traditional banking features with modern financial software, including automated bookkeeping, certified accounting tools, and granular spend management. This "all-in-one" approach is designed to replace the fragmented systems many SMEs use to manage their cash flow. In the competitive landscape of European neobanking, Qonto distinguishes itself by focusing exclusively on the B2B market, avoiding the retail banking distractions that occupy many of its peers. Its growth has been characterized by both organic expansion and strategic acquisitions, reinforcing its status as a leading financial partner for the European small-to-medium enterprise sector.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked Qonto’s rapid expansion and product diversification throughout 2026. In September, the company signaled its long-term commitment to the European market by opening a massive 11,000 sqm Paris HQ to fuel European banking ambitions. This physical expansion followed significant moves into the accounting space; in July, Qonto acquired Acasi assets to launch integrated certified accounting for French SMEs, a key step in providing the sophisticated tools Urlichs is now tasked with scaling. Additionally, FF News covered the firm’s socio-economic insights in June, reporting on Qonto research: 46% of European small business owners skip salaries to avoid debt stigma, highlighting the financial pressures facing the very segment Qonto aims to support.

What this means

The appointment of a PayPal veteran to lead an "upmarket" push highlights a critical maturation point for the European B2B neobanking sector. As the initial wave of fintech startups matures, the battle for profitability is shifting from high-volume micro-entities to high-value, established SMEs. This segment is traditionally the stronghold of legacy banks, which offer the complex credit and treasury services scaling firms require. By institutionalizing an upmarket strategy, Qonto is directly challenging the incumbency of traditional lenders. The move places significant pressure on competitors to prove they can handle the operational complexity of larger firms without losing the agility that defined their early success.
