Orange Middle East and Africa Partners with the Hedera Africa Hackathon to Boost Web3 Innovation

Orange Digital Center is partnering with the Hedera Africa Hackathon to drive Web3 education and decentralized technology adoption across 16 countries in Africa and the Middle East. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant push to develop a blockchain-ready workforce and local infrastructure in emerging markets, backed by a million-dollar prize pool.

What was announced

The partnership centers on the Hedera Africa Hackathon, a continent-wide competition designed to identify and reward blockchain solutions with impact. The initiative is organized by The Hashgraph Association and Exponential Science, with operations managed by Dar Blockchain. A primary component of the collaboration is the rollout of a certifying training program focused on Hedera technology. This educational curriculum will be deployed across Orange Digital Centers in 16 countries throughout the Middle East and Africa, targeting young people, professionals, and entrepreneurs.

The training is intended to prepare participants for the hackathon itself, which officially launched on August 1, 2025. The event is expected to mobilize more than 10,000 participants. It will operate as a hybrid event, utilizing the physical infrastructure of the Orange Digital Center network to provide participants with technical resources, personalized mentoring, and strategic networking opportunities alongside an online platform. To incentivize the development of high-potential decentralized applications, the organizers have established an endowment of more than one million dollars in prizes for the most promising projects.

The companies involved

The Orange Digital Center network serves as a regional hub for digital inclusion, specifically targeting the development of skills for youth and entrepreneurs in Africa and the Middle East. These centers provide the physical and technical foundation for digital literacy and innovation programs. The Hashgraph Association and Exponential Science are non-profit organizations that focus on the advancement and adoption of decentralized technologies globally. Their involvement in this initiative highlights a commitment to fostering innovation through blockchain education and ecosystem support.

Dar Blockchain acts as the operational lead for the hackathon, positioning itself as a Pan-African hub for Web3 development. By combining the physical reach of the Orange Digital Centers with the technical focus of The Hashgraph Association and the regional expertise of Dar Blockchain, the partnership attempts to bridge the gap between theoretical blockchain knowledge and the creation of functional, localized solutions within the African and Middle Eastern fintech landscapes.

What this means

This initiative signals a shift in the African fintech narrative from basic mobile money services toward more complex decentralized finance and Web3 applications. By embedding training directly into a major regional network like Orange Digital Centers, the project addresses the talent gap that often hinders blockchain adoption in emerging markets. However, the influx of over 10,000 trained developers could put significant pressure on traditional regional banks to accelerate their own digital transformation or risk losing market share to a new wave of decentralized competitors. The primary question remains whether the local regulatory environments can keep pace with the rapid deployment of the million-dollar-backed solutions this hackathon aims to produce.
