Klarna Announces Plans For CMO and CFO Transitions In 2027
By Lauren Towner · 19 August 2026

Klarna Group plc [NYSE: KLAR] has announced planned transitions for its Chief Financial Officer and Chief Marketing Officer, to take effect in early 2027. Niclas Neglén, CFO for six years, and David Sandström, CMO for nine years, will each remain in their roles and lead their organisations through the transition — an unusually long runway that underlines the orderly nature of the change.
What was announced
Neglén will continue to lead the finance organisation and investor engagement, supporting a transition into next year, including in his capacity as a board member. The search for his successor — specifically a New York-based CFO — is already underway, a detail that reflects Klarna's status as a NYSE-listed company.
Sandström will continue to lead marketing through the transition and will prepare the brand and the team for the next phase of Klarna's development.
Klarna was explicit that neither transition was the result of any disagreement with the company on any matters related to its operations, policies or practices.
"Niclas and David have helped shape what Klarna is. Niclas has built the finance organization that took us public and has been a trusted partner to me and the Board through six years of growth and change. David has given Klarna a voice; he took a Nordic payments company and has built one of the most recognized brands in global finance. Both will leave Klarna a stronger company than the one they joined, and I am grateful to them both."

The people involved
Neglén has led Klarna's finance organisation through its growth years and its listing on the New York Stock Exchange, and sits on the Klarna Group plc board. "It's been an extraordinary six years and I'm deeply proud of what we have built together. I am very pleased we've been able to plan the transition in a way that gives Klarna plenty of continuity," he said.
Sandström, CMO for nine years, is credited by the company with taking a Nordic payments brand and building one of the most recognised names in global finance. "Klarna has been the defining chapter of my working life. Building this brand with an extraordinary team has been a privilege, and I am proud of what we built to get here," he said.
What this means
The 18-month runway, the retained board seat, and the explicit no-disagreement statement all point the same way: this is a planned succession, not an abrupt departure. The one forward-looking signal worth noting is the search for a New York-based CFO, which aligns Klarna's finance leadership with its NYSE listing and its US investor base. Klarna today reports over 120 million active users, 3.8 million transactions per day, and more than 1.2 million retail partners.
