ITC London Announces Five Finalists for Generali Challenge Lab at ITC London 2026

ITC London has revealed the five startup finalists for its inaugural Challenge Lab, a competition platform designed to bridge the gap between emerging insurtech and industry incumbents. Sponsored by Generali, the initiative focuses on leveraging insurance as a tool for climate resilience and social equity, highlighting a growing industry mandate to integrate sustainability into core underwriting and product design.

What was announced

The Challenge Lab is a new competition platform designed to connect early-stage innovators with established industry leaders to solve systemic insurance issues. For its inaugural run, the platform has selected five startups—Senen, Ledgertech, Betterfly, MyVal, and Innovatrix—to compete in a live pitching session. This final stage will take place on the main stage at ITC London 2026, scheduled for 26–27 January 2026 at The Brewery in London.

The competition, themed “Protecting People, Empowering Planet,” required applicants to address five specific pillars defined by the sponsor, Generali:

  • Climate Risk Intelligence: Using data and AI to assess risks from floods, wildfires, and extreme weather.
  • Sustainable Incentives: Creating models that reward greener behaviour through pricing or coverage enhancements.
  • SDG Integration: Embedding Sustainable Development Goals into underwriting to direct capital toward responsible enterprises.
  • Social Impact: Extending protection to vulnerable communities affected by climate change.
  • Innovation Beyond Tradition: Exploring parametric, microinsurance, and embedded models to support sustainable consumption.

The finalists will present their solutions to an invite-only audience of over 600 C-suite executives and decision-makers. Following the success of the 2025 edition, the 2026 event is designed to facilitate high-impact networking and collaboration. The Challenge Lab was launched to encourage startups to reimagine insurance as a force for good, focusing on products that actively support the transition to a low-carbon economy and social equity.

"These finalists show how aligning risk protection with sustainability goals can help insurance shape behaviour, allocate capital responsibly, and drive climate resilience and social equity."

The companies involved

ITC London serves as a central hub for insurance innovation and digital transformation, hosting major industry gatherings that bring together decision-makers from across the European market. The organization’s programming, led by Head of Content Lee Cibis, focuses on the intersection of technological advancement and commercial impact. By hosting the Challenge Lab at its 2026 summit at The Brewery, ITC London provides a platform for startups to engage directly with the sector's leadership.

Generali, the primary sponsor of the Challenge Lab, is a global insurance entity that is increasingly focusing on the alignment of risk protection with broader sustainability goals. Through its innovation department, led by Danilo Raponi, the company is seeking to identify and support technologies that can shape consumer behaviour and drive climate resilience.

The five finalists—Senen, Ledgertech, Betterfly, MyVal, and Innovatrix—represent a diverse range of insurtech solutions. These companies were selected for their potential to scale and their ability to integrate sustainability into the core of the insurance value chain. Their participation highlights a broader industry trend where startups are reimagining the role of insurance in society, particularly through models like parametric coverage and microinsurance for underserved populations.

What this means

This selection signals a definitive shift in how major insurers view the intersection of ESG and product development. By moving beyond traditional indemnity models toward "Innovation Beyond Tradition"—specifically parametric and microinsurance—the industry is acknowledging that standard coverage is no longer sufficient for climate-related volatility. The pressure is now on incumbents to prove that sustainability metrics can be effectively embedded into underwriting without compromising commercial viability. For the broader market, this raises questions about the standardisation of SDG data; if every insurer develops proprietary metrics for "responsible enterprises," the sector risks fragmentation. However, the focus on "Sustainable Incentives" suggests that the next frontier for fintech will be behavioral modification through pricing.
