Canara Bank Partners with i-exceed to Launch Omni-Channel Consumer Banking Solution
By Effie Foxtrot · 6 December 2019

Canara Bank has deployed i-exceed’s Appzillon Omni-Channel Consumer Banking solution to unify its digital services across mobile and internet platforms. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant modernization effort by a major Indian public sector bank, addressing the critical challenge of integrating modern, scalable digital experiences with complex legacy banking infrastructure.
What was announced
Canara Bank’s new Omni-Channel Consumer Banking platform is designed to provide a consistent user experience across all digital touchpoints. Built on the Appzillon Digital Experience Platform, the solution allows customers to use a single set of credentials and access a unified beneficiary database and transaction limits across the bank’s various mobile and internet channels. The system is designed to function as a stand-alone solution while maintaining deep integration with existing legacy systems.
The implementation utilizes a micro-app based architecture. This allows developers to select and customize specific micro-apps from the Appzillon Digital Repository, facilitating faster development cycles compared to traditional monolithic platforms. The "code once deploy anywhere" methodology ensures that applications function across different operating systems, browsers, and device form factors with minimal additional effort. This scalable architecture was specifically chosen to handle the high volumes of transactions typical of Canara Bank’s internet banking channel.
This launch follows the bank’s initial digital push in 2017 with the introduction of CANDI, which was established as India’s first digital banking branch offering instant digital on-boarding. The project has already gained industry recognition, with analyst firm IBS Intelligence awarding i-exceed the Global FinTech Innovation Award for "Most Innovative Digital Banking Implementation" at Canara Bank.
"We are proud to be associated with Canara Bank for almost three years in their digital transformation endeavours. We are very excited to partner with them on their multiple digital initiatives as they become a digital-first bank. We wish Canara Bank all the best in their initiatives and look forward to our continued engagement as there is a tremendous opportunity to bring more customers to perform all their transactions digitally."

What this means
This move highlights the intensifying pressure on traditional public sector banks to match the agility of digital-native competitors. By adopting a micro-app architecture, Canara Bank is attempting to bypass the "legacy drag" that often slows down innovation in large institutions. The shift toward a unified beneficiary and credential system is now a baseline expectation for consumers, and banks that fail to provide this seamless transition between mobile and desktop risk losing market share. The industry is watching to see if such modular platforms can truly sustain the high transaction volumes of the Indian market while allowing for the rapid deployment of new financial products.
