Press Release: Flagstar Bank Taps Fiserv’s Finxact for Major Core Banking Modernization Strategy | Featured Image by FF News

Flagstar Bank has selected Finxact from Fiserv to serve as the technological foundation for its enterprise-wide core modernization. This move signals a significant shift for large-scale regional lenders moving away from rigid legacy systems toward cloud-native, API-first architectures to enable real-time processing and faster product deployment in an increasingly competitive digital landscape.

What was announced

Flagstar Bank, N.A. has designated Finxact as the primary system of record and transaction processing engine for its ongoing technology transformation, known as the Flagstar S2 Platform™. The initiative, which stands for "Simple and Sophisticated," aims to consolidate the bank’s disparate legacy systems into a single, unified core. To ensure operational stability during this transition, Flagstar will implement the conversion through a phased approach rather than a single "big bang" migration.

The Finxact platform is a cloud-native, API-first solution designed to provide financial institutions with real-time access to data. Unlike traditional core banking systems that rely on end-of-day batch processing, Finxact utilizes temporal transaction processing. This eliminates the need for batch reconciliation, providing the bank with a continuous, authoritative version of its data across the entire enterprise. For Flagstar, this architecture is intended to support the rapid delivery of new digital products, facilitate embedded finance opportunities, and improve overall operational agility.

By adopting this modern stack, Flagstar aims to meet the rising demand for digital-first banking experiences. The open and extensible nature of the platform allows for seamless integration with third-party services, effectively future-proofing the bank's technology investments as customer expectations and regulatory requirements evolve.

"At the heart of everything we do is a genuine commitment to making banking better for our customers starting with how we build and evolve our technology. Choosing Finxact wasn't just a technical decision, it was a pivotal moment for us. A significant enabler of everything the Flagstar S2 Platform is becoming, Finxact will give us the freedom to move faster, grow smarter, and deliver the kind of real-time, seamless experiences that today's customers expect. We're not just keeping up with the future of financial services — we're building it."

Christopher Higgins, Chief Information & Operations Officer at Flagstar Bank.

The companies involved

Fiserv, Inc. is a global provider of payments and financial technology, listed on the NASDAQ under the symbol FISV. The company maintains a dominant position in the financial services sector, providing the underlying infrastructure for thousands of institutions worldwide. In recent years, Fiserv has aggressively expanded its cloud-native capabilities to address the growing demand for modern core banking solutions that can compete with fintech challengers.

Finxact operates as a key component of Fiserv’s modern banking suite. It was developed as an open, API-first platform specifically to solve the limitations of legacy core systems, which often struggle with real-time data accessibility and integration. Flagstar Bank, N.A., the entity adopting the technology, is a subsidiary of New York Community Bancorp, Inc. (NYSE: NYCB). Flagstar stands as one of the largest regional banks in the United States, operating a significant network of branches and a large-scale mortgage origination business. The bank’s move to modernize its core reflects a broader trend among regional players to consolidate technology stacks following mergers and acquisitions.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed the evolution of the Finxact platform, particularly its transition into the Fiserv ecosystem. In early 2022, we covered the definitive move by Fiserv to Accelerate Digital Banking Transformation for Clients with Acquisition of Finxact, a deal that integrated the cloud-native core into Fiserv’s broader portfolio. Prior to the acquisition, FF News reported on the platform's technical milestones, including when Finxact Introduces No-Code Visual Product Launchpad to simplify product creation for bankers.

The platform has also gained traction with diverse financial entities. We previously reported on its adoption by niche and international players, such as when Chicago-based Banking Startup BetaBank Selects Finxact Next-Gen Banking Platform and the Zenus Announces Landmark Agreement With Finxact for international digital banking services.

What this means

This partnership is a significant validation of Fiserv’s acquisition of Finxact. While smaller startups and neobanks have long embraced cloud-native cores, seeing a major regional player like Flagstar commit to a full-scale migration proves that the technology is now considered mature enough for Tier 1 and Tier 2 institutions. This puts immense pressure on other legacy core providers who have been slower to move away from batch-based processing.

The "phased approach" mentioned by Flagstar is the crucial element to watch. Core migrations are notoriously risky; if Flagstar successfully migrates its massive mortgage and retail operations without disruption, it will provide a blueprint for other large banks currently paralyzed by technical debt. For the wider market, this move signals that "real-time" is no longer a luxury feature but a foundational requirement for survival in the digital age.
