Press Release: Fintech District Data Reveals 75% of Fintechs Now Serve Non-Financial Sectors | Featured Image by FF News

Fintech District’s latest mapping of its 307-strong community reveals a significant shift, with 75% of member companies now operating in non-financial sectors like retail and healthcare. This diversification signifies that fintech is no longer a siloed industry but a foundational layer for the broader economy, demanding attention from professionals across all verticals.

What was announced

A comprehensive analysis of the Fintech District community conducted in September 2026 has identified that the boundaries of the fintech sector are becoming increasingly blurred. Of the companies mapped, 231 (roughly 75%) have at least one area of application in a non-financial sector. The most frequent applications are found in Retail & GDO with 138 companies, followed by e-commerce with 135, and Consulting & freelance professionals with 129. Other significant areas of penetration include Real estate & construction (118), Utilities (115), and Pharma/Healthcare (112).

To better reflect this evolution, Fintech District has introduced a new classification system comprising 10 macro-categories: Investments & Capital Markets, Payments & Orchestration, Data & Decision Intelligence, CX & Agentic Commerce, Compliance & Security, Operations & Financial Management, Lending & Credit, InsurTech, Alternative Funding, and Neo-banking. Each of these categories is further divided into five sub-categories to capture the extreme specialisation of the current market. For instance, the InsurTech category now explicitly includes sub-sectors such as Embedded Insurance, Claims Management & Insurance Operations, and Insurance Data, Analytics & Decision Intelligence.

The data highlights two distinct market trends. Approximately 25% of the community acts as "enablers," applying their solutions across at least 14 of the 15 non-financial sectors analysed. These companies typically focus on Operations & Financial Management, Data & Decision Intelligence, and Lending & Credit, providing essential services like e-invoicing and trade credit management. Conversely, another 25% of the community remains strictly within the financial sphere, with Investments & Capital Markets accounting for more than a third of this group. While the community remains rooted in Italy, it has seen significant international growth, now including 17 companies from France, 16 from the UK, 12 from Germany, and seven each from the USA, Switzerland, and Latvia.

"Fintech District was founded with a clear goal: to be a point of reference for the fintech world. This has allowed us to observe the ecosystem from the inside and capture the changes that have shaped it over these nine years. Today we are witnessing a new phase in which – thanks to the spread of increasingly cross-industry technologies – the perimeter has extended beyond the financial world to include companies operating in different sectors, with some covering several areas at once. This is the true value and richness of a Community that is not only growing in numbers and has strengthened its international dimension over the years with the arrival of companies from abroad, but is also able to bring together players with cross-cutting expertise, responding to new needs and new market dynamics"

The companies involved

Fintech District is a Milan-based international community that serves as a gateway to the Italian fintech ecosystem. Founded in 2017, the organisation has spent nearly a decade acting as a bridge between startups, traditional financial institutions, and corporate entities. It provides a platform for collaboration, aiming to foster innovation through "cross-pollination" between different market players. From its inception, the ecosystem has moved from a focus on traditional financial services to a model where technologies and business models converge across multiple sectors.

The community currently numbers 307 companies, reflecting a mature market where specialisation is high. While it maintains a strong domestic base in Italy, its membership has diversified to include a significant number of firms from major global hubs, including the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. This international dimension is central to its role in the market, as it facilitates the entry of foreign fintechs into the Italian landscape while helping local players scale. The organisation’s influence is particularly visible in its ability to map and categorise the rapid shifts in how financial technology is applied to the "real economy."

What FF News has reported before

FF News has previously tracked the growth of Fintech District’s influence through its strategic partnerships and corporate integrations. In September 2026, we reported on how Salone dei Pagamenti and Fintech District Partner to Scale Italy’s International Payments Ecosystem, a move designed to strengthen Italy's position in the global payments landscape. Prior to this, in July 2024, the community demonstrated its value to the automotive and financial sectors when Toyota Financial Services Italy Partners with Fabrick and Fintech District. These reports underscore a consistent trend of Fintech District facilitating high-level corporate access to fintech innovation, moving beyond simple networking into deep operational partnerships.

What this means

The transition of fintech from a standalone sector to an "invisible" enabling layer across the economy is now a measurable reality. The fact that 75% of these companies operate outside traditional finance suggests that the "fintech" label itself may soon become redundant as these technologies become standard features of retail, healthcare, and utilities. This shift puts immense pressure on traditional financial institutions that have relied on being the sole gatekeepers of capital and credit. As "Agentic Commerce" and "Embedded Insurance" become the norm, the industry faces a critical question: can traditional banks maintain their relevance when the most innovative financial services are being delivered through non-financial platforms?
