Commercial Bank of Dubai has joined the Commercial Bank Money Token initiative, becoming the first institution from outside Europe to enter the network. This move bridges the Europe-Gulf trade corridor via distributed ledger technology, offering fintech professionals a regulated alternative to non-bank stablecoins for cross-border corporate settlement and treasury operations.

What was announced

The Commercial Bank Money Token (CBMT) initiative, spearheaded by Die Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft (DK), aims to transition commercial bank money onto digital rails using distributed ledger technology (DLT). By joining the network, Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD) will connect its regional corporate client base with a European ecosystem that includes Commerzbank, DZ Bank, Helaba, UniCredit, ABN AMRO, BNP Paribas, and DNB. Unlike unregulated stablecoins, CBMT tokens represent regulated bank deposits held on the issuing bank’s balance sheet, subject to the same prudential standards as traditional deposits.

CBD will initially onboard to the CBMT Sandbox, which launched in Frankfurt in November 2025. This environment allows participants to test the full lifecycle of tokenised flows, including issuance, enterprise payments, and interbank settlement. The initiative has already demonstrated technical viability, completing initial live multi-bank deposit token transfers with industrial corporates in 2026. The network currently supports several major currencies, including the euro, US dollar, Japanese yen, and Norwegian krone. CBD’s involvement will focus on exploring use cases such as cross-border corporate payments, trade settlement, and working capital optimisation between the Middle East and Europe, supported by technical service providers GFT and UDPN. All activities within the Sandbox are conducted according to applicable regulatory requirements and do not yet represent a commitment to a full commercial launch.

"Joining CBMT is a natural next step in CBD’s digital transformation strategy and our long-standing role in connecting the UAE businesses with international markets. As the first bank from outside Europe to participate, we bring the perspective of the Gulf’s banking and trade sector to a broader effort to modernise commercial bank money on a secure, regulated basis,"

Dr. Bernd van Linder, Chief Executive Officer, CBD.

The companies involved

Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD) is a major financial institution in the United Arab Emirates, established over five decades ago. It maintains a significant presence in corporate and trade finance, with a specific focus on digital banking innovation within the Middle East. The bank has increasingly positioned itself as a bridge for international trade, leveraging its ties to European banking sectors to facilitate regional growth. The bank's digital strategy has recently focused on democratising wealth management and enhancing SME access to capital.

The CBMT initiative is governed by Die Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft (DK), the umbrella organisation for the German banking industry. It represents a concerted effort by traditional financial institutions to reclaim the digital asset space from non-bank issuers. The network is designed as a multi-issuer, multi-currency, and multi-chain ecosystem, intended to solve the inherent friction, high costs, and slow speeds associated with traditional cross-border settlement. Technical implementation for the project is supported by GFT, a global digital transformation firm, and the Universal Digital Payments Network (UDPN). Other key participants include DZ BANK AG, one of Germany’s largest cooperative banks, and several major European tier-one lenders such as BNP Paribas and ABN AMRO.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked the digital evolution of Commercial Bank of Dubai as it expands its footprint in the UAE and beyond. In August 2026, the publication reported that the Commercial Bank of Dubai Becomes First UAE Bank to Launch Multi-Bank Payment Initiation, a milestone in regional open banking. This followed the launch of CBD Invest, an initiative aimed at democratising digital wealth management through automated tools. More recently, in September 2026, FF News covered how NEOPAY and CBD Partner to Unlock Working Capital Financing for UAE SMEs. These developments highlight the bank's consistent focus on integrating advanced financial technology into its core corporate and retail offerings to improve liquidity and payment efficiency.

What this means

The inclusion of a Middle Eastern bank into a primarily European DLT initiative signals a shift in the race to standardise tokenised deposits. For the industry, this moves the needle by proving that commercial bank money tokens can function across different regulatory jurisdictions and geographic corridors. It puts pressure on non-bank stablecoin issuers who have previously dominated the "on-chain" payment space by offering a regulated, bankruptcy-remote alternative that fits within existing prudential frameworks. The primary question for the sector now is whether this multi-currency model can achieve the liquidity and inter-bank consensus necessary to challenge the dominance of traditional correspondent banking for high-value trade settlement.
