Tandem Customers Look to Blue Skies On The Most Depressing Day of The Year

The third Monday in January may not be the darkest day of the year in literal terms, but for people struggling to get through the month it’s certainly an uphill battle. Originally coined by a travel company, it’s no surprise that millions of people book flights and travel insurance every “Blue Monday”.

Tandem Bank have found that their customers spend 94% more on travel the 21st January than on the 21st in any other month – 57% more than the next highest. For many, having a holiday to look forward to helps them get through the lows of a cold UK winter.

Matt Ford, Product Director at Tandem Bank, says “We’ve noticed a trend of Tandem customers making plans to travel overseas on Blue Monday. Escapism? Maybe. Something to cheer you up on a dark January Monday? Definitely. If you can afford to, take the time to make a plan for the future and save some money towards it.”

Tandem’s banking app is a tool designed to help people work towards goals. It analyses transactions to flag rising bills, unnecessary fees and duplicate payments, and will soon let users save little and often with an intelligent Autosavings tool. The bank also offers two credit cards, neither of which charge fees when people spend abroad.

Matt Ford, adds, “We’re always looking at how are customers use their money throughout the year and thinking of ways to help them make their lives that bit richer. If you do make holiday plans this Blue Monday, make the most of it by setting aside some savings and spending with a card designed for travel when you reach your destination.”

For those who haven’t got on top of their savings quite yet, there’s always the cheaper consolation of comfort food on the sofa. Tandem’s stats reveal that spending on takeaways is up by an average of 20% on Blue Monday too!
