New Initiative From Lunar Cuts a Further 750 Tonnes of Co₂e Annually

Lunar is extending its renewable electricity matching from offices in Sweden and Denmark to employees’ households, adding the equivalent amount of renewable power to each country’s grid. Building on an existing annual reduction of 210 tonnes CO₂e from offices, the new step is expected to reduce emissions by an additional 750 tonnes CO₂e per year.

Lunar is taking the next step in its sustainability work. Having already matched office electricity consumption in Sweden and Denmark with renewable electricity, the initiative now expands to include every employee’s household. This means Lunar will match every kilowatt-hour used in employees’ homes by adding the same amount of green electricity to the national grids in Sweden and Denmark.

“We’ve focused on getting our own initiatives in place to show a way forward and encourage others to join in the transition. Now we’re expanding the effort and making our employees an active part of the green shift—without them needing to do anything themselves,” said Gitte Roskær, Chief Operating Officer at Lunar.

Lunar is today among the most energy-efficient banks in the Nordics*. Since work on office emissions began two years ago, annual emissions have fallen by 210 tonnes CO₂e. With the new employee initiative, Lunar expects to reduce emissions by a further ~750 tonnes CO₂e per year (market-based emissions factor, 450 kg CO₂e/MWh, 2024).

“We’re taking the next step together with our colleagues. It’s about doing what we can here and now, while also moving the industry forward and making decisions that lead to measurable reductions. If more organisations did the same, the effect would be significant,” said Gitte Roskær.

What 750 tonnes CO₂e per year equates to**:

  • 450 round trips from Copenhagen–New York

  • 3 million kilometres in a petrol car

  • One year of beef consumption for 950 people

The renewable electricity comes from Ingerslev Å Solar Park in Norddjurs, Jutland—a privately financed project without subsidies. Lunar also supports local biodiversity through measures such as planting native hedgerows, establishing species-rich meadows, and creating a “beetle bank” to provide habitats for insects, birds, and small mammals. Impacts are measured and followed up using KPIs for Net Gain baseline (Natural England).
