SIBS Produces Biodegradable PVC Cards

SIBS, a leader in payments processing and financial technological services in Europe and the Iberian leader in Card Production and Personalization, through its unit for commercial cards production, has just launched the new Biodegradable PVC cards, representing a more sustainable alternative to traditional PVC, reducing environment’s impact. SIBS is at the forefront in the production of biodegradable cards, suitable for different types and levels of security, including bank cards.

Always outstanding at the forefront of innovation, SIBS is also concerned with today’s demanding environmental needs, that’s why the company sought a solution to produce greener cards, ensuring the technical characteristics needed to produce cards for various usages.

These Biodegradable PVC cards are already available for order and they have already been selected by customers from various sectors, like hotels, banks and sport companies; SIBS itself has now started producing its business cards in this new material.

“For a long time that SIBS is concerned about greener alternatives, especially when we have one of the largest card production and personalization factories in Iberian Peninsula, where, of course, plastic is one of the main raw materials”, underlines Gonçalo Campos Alves, SIBS’ Card Production and Personalization Unit Director, adding that “This announcement is another accomplishment of SIBS’ mission to create value for Society by developing and managing technology-based solutions that combine security, convenience and innovation, respecting the good behavioral principles and the sustainability conditions”.

The card biodegradability is achieved through the salt that is in its composition and acts as a degrading additive. It’s this component that allows the card degradation process to begin as soon as the material is exposed to a fertile environment. The PVC biodegradability was tested according to the ASTM D5511 Test Method, which determines anaerobic biodegradation of plastic materials.

The new biodegradable cards complement SIBS’ offer in cards production and personalization with the most diverse technologies, consolidating its leadership in this industry. SIBS’ Card Unit has an annual volume of over 12 million cards produced and 20 million cards personalized.
