PPRO Brings Swish into PayPal, Giving Swedish Consumers a Familiar Way to Pay Around the World

WHY THIS MATTERS: This integration is a significant marker for the accelerating trend of payments localization in cross-border commerce. As digital spending explodes globally, the primary friction point for merchants remains the checkout experience in foreign markets. Sweden, with its high consumer appetite for international retail and $15 billion e-commerce sector, exemplifies the demand for familiar local payment methods (LPMs), such as Swish. The partnership between PayPal and PPRO demonstrates that global payment giants are increasingly relying on specialized payment orchestration platforms to connect their massive merchant networks to niche but critical domestic schemes. This is a value-first move, as allowing 8.7 million users to pay with their trusted instant payment app directly addresses cart abandonment rates and unlocks substantial growth for global retailers. For merchants, this is no longer a luxury—it’s the minimum requirement for effectively capturing digitally savvy European consumers.

PPRO, one of the leading local payments platforms, has collaborated with PayPal to enable 8.7 million Swish users to pay with their preferred payment method at thousands of online stores around the world. By combining Swish’s familiarity with PayPal’s global reach and PPRO’s local payments infrastructure, shoppers get a simple and secure way to pay internationally, while merchants can easily reach one of Europe’s most digitally advanced consumer markets.

Sweden is among the world’s most mature e-commerce markets, with online sales reaching nearly $15 billion in 2025 and continuing to grow. Swedish consumers are also highly international in their purchasing behaviour, with a growing share of online spending directed to merchants outside Sweden. In 2025, 82% of PayPal users in Sweden made at least one purchase from a foreign retailer. By making Swish available through its platform, PayPal gives Swedish shoppers more choice at checkout wherever they shop online and helps merchants capture both domestic and international demand.

‘This is a natural step in making Swish available in more e-commerce contexts by connecting a payment method trusted by millions of Swedes with PayPal’s global platform. Together, we make it easier for merchants worldwide to meet Swedish consumers with a payment experience that feels familiar, simple and secure,’ said Simon Nilsson, Chief Business Officer at Swish.

Motie Bring, CEO at PPRO, said: ‘Our collaboration with PayPal is built on a shared mission to make local payments more accessible for international commerce. By integrating Swish into PayPal’s platform, we are connecting global merchants with one of the most digitally advanced consumer markets in the world. This isn’t just about adding a payment method; it’s about giving Swedish shoppers the checkout experience they trust while enabling merchants to expand into new markets with ease.’

The Swish integration is part of PayPal’s broader cooperation with PPRO, its long-standing technology provider for local payment infrastructure. Through this collaboration, PayPal has recently enabled more than 30 local payment methods for merchants worldwide, helping them reach consumers with the ways they prefer to pay.

FF NEWS TAKE: This announcement undeniably moves the needle, not just for the Swedish market, but as a blueprint for global payments strategy. It confirms that the future of cross-border commerce hinges on hyper-localization, even for major players like PayPal. The next frontier to watch will be the speed of roll-out across other high-value, digitally mature markets in Northern Europe and Asia where domestic instant payment schemes dominate. Expect further acceleration in PPRO’s role as the essential infrastructure layer for connecting the legacy global rails to regional innovation
