Visa Launches Visa Intelligent Authorisation to Modernise Payment Processing in Europe
WHY THIS MATTERS: The debut of Visa Intelligent Authorisation (VIA) in Europe signifies a critical turning point for the continent’s payment infrastructure. Acquirers, historically burdened by cumbersome legacy stacks, are now under immense pressure to support rising transaction volumes from channels like mobile wallets and emerging agentic commerce. This solution addresses the root cause of lost revenue: high false decline rates and poor operational resilience. By offering a single, machine learning-driven API for authorisation and intelligent routing, Visa is essentially future-proofing the acquiring landscape. This is a strategic move to lock in foundational processing business while preparing the entire merchant acceptance ecosystem for the complexity that AI-driven and cross-network transactions will soon demand. For retailers and financial institutions, VIA promises not just better uptime, but a vital competitive edge in maximizing transaction success today.
Visa today announced the launch of Visa Intelligent Authorisation (VIA) in Europe. This new capability on the Visa Acceptance Platform enables acquirers (banks and other financial institutions that process payments for merchants) to modernise their payment processing while strengthening operational resilience through a single API connection, helping eliminate the need for expensive, time‑consuming infrastructure rebuilds. In Europe, Visa is partnering with an initial group of acquirers including Comercia Global Payments, Elavon, Fiserv, UNICRE and Worldline to unlock VIA’s capabilities.
Authorisation is core to how digital payments work: in real-time, acquirers send authorisation requests through card networks to issuing banks, which approve or decline within seconds. Yet legacy systems can struggle with today’s volumes and data complexity – resulting in false declines, higher costs, and limiting innovation.
VIA helps address these challenges by providing a modern authorisation capability that can process transactions across major card networks through a single integration. The solution delivers 99.999% uptime[1] and achieves an average approval rate of 96.3%[2] globally, both industry‑leading benchmarks. It can be used as an acquirer’s main processor or as a complement to extend their capabilities.
Its machine learning engine analyses transaction data in real-time to help optimise routing decisions based on network rules, industry programs, and regional regulations. The product is also able to provide near real-time visibility of authorisation outcomes, and offers instant risk alerts, and a centralised portal complete with an analytics dashboard to streamline oversight, settlement, and regulatory compliance tools.
Prerequisite for innovation
As digital payments evolve, modern processing infrastructure is becoming a prerequisite for innovation. Digital wallets, stablecoins, and new forms of commerce (such as agentic commerce) are increasing both the volume and complexity of transactions flowing through authorisation systems.
Visa research highlights the pace of this shift: mobile payments now represent more than half (59%) of all e-commerce transactions in Europe, and that figure is expected to rise to three quarters (75%) by 2030[3].
“Commerce is moving faster than ever – across channels, markets and payment types – but too many transactions are still flowing through acquiring stacks built for a very different pace,” said Dan Parsons, Head of Acceptance Sales at Visa Europe. “When systems can’t keep up, the result is higher decline rates, increased costs and missed sales for merchants. Visa Intelligent Authorisation will help change that. It gives acquirers a fast path to modern, resilient processing, helping them build for what’s happening now, and what’s coming next.”
Paul Adams, SVP, Head of Merchant Product EMEA at Fiserv said: “Visa Intelligent Authorisation gives acquirers a faster path to modern, resilient processing. For our merchants and bank partners, this kind of infrastructure matters — it reduces friction, improves approval performance, and creates space for innovation. We are pleased to work with Visa on solutions that raise the standard for payments across Europe.”
Carla Castro, Head of E-commerce, Vertical Markets & Partnerships at UNICRE said: “With more than 50 years of experience in the payments sector, UNICRE is entering a new phase of its journey with a clear ambition to grow beyond borders. International expansion was a strategic and deliberate choice, for which Visa emerged as the natural partner, given its scale, innovation and shared vision for the future of payments. By combining our deep understanding of local markets with Visa’s innovative acceptance solutions, such as Tap to Phone, we are effectively addressing the emerging needs of the international market. This partnership reflects our long‑term vision and our core commitment: to empower our customers with simple, secure and innovative payment solutions that drive smarter, more sustainable and future‑ready growth.”
Markus Frei, Head of Acquiring at Worldline said: “Worldline is extending how merchants accept payments. Our partnership with Visa Intelligent Authorisation enables fast and smart payment approvals, helping accept new businesses, reduce fraud, and reach new customer segments including e-commerce sellers, subscription services, and digital marketplaces.”
FF NEWS TAKE: This launch is more than a product update; it’s an infrastructure defense strategy by Visa, making a direct play against the complexity of modern digital payments. By simplifying access to advanced capabilities like intelligent routing, VIA significantly raises the bar for operational resilience and transaction performance in Europe. The true test now lies in the speed and quantifiable results delivered by the initial acquirer partners. Watch for hard metrics demonstrating a reduction in false declines and a measurable improvement in overall merchant acceptance rates.
