Visa Direct Collaborates With Moonrise by Lunar to Expand Local Payment Access and Virtual Accounts Across the Nordics

WHY THIS MATTERS: Global payment giants are recognizing that universal card networks alone are insufficient for modern cross-border money movement. The strategic shift is now fundamentally focused on achieving seamless global to local settlement. This partnership is a prime example of a major card network acquiring essential local infrastructure—specifically, API access to highly structured and advanced Nordic payment rails. The complexity of operating across Denmark, Sweden, and Norway (each with its own distinct national systems) is a significant barrier to entry for many global firms. By leveraging a challenger bank’s embedded finance solution, Visa Direct effectively bypasses the need for multiple, cumbersome local integrations. This dramatically speeds up the time-to-market for its clients and bolsters its capabilities in the competitive world of real-time payments. This move confirms that true global scale now requires deep local embeddedness to deliver a resilient and consistent experience.

Visa Direct is collaborating with Moonrise, powered by the Nordic challenger bank Lunar, to access local payment rails across Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. The partnership strengthens Visa Direct’s ability to support real-time, domestic payments and local account access for clients operating in or expanding into the Nordic region.

The partnership will enable Visa Direct to extend its global payments platform with local Nordic capabilities by integrating Moonrise’s suite of local accounts and payment infrastructure, including virtual accounts, pay-ins, and pay-outs across domestic payment schemes in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, through a single API.

“Visa is building the next generation of global payments infrastructure, and Moonrise is what brings the Nordics into that equation,” says Lunar’s CEO and founder, Ken Villum Klausen. “By simplifying access to local payment rails, Moonrise enables global payment players to deliver local market payment experiences and scale in the region with greater speed, reliability, and confidence, without the need for multiple local integrations.” The collaboration builds on the existing relationship between Lunar and Visa, evolving it from point solutions into a complete, scalable payment offering for Visa Direct’s clients across the Nordics.

“Access to true local accounts and payment rails is becoming a key differentiator in markets across Europe, and this expands Visa Direct’s collection capabilities,” says Philip Konopik, SVP, Head of Commercial & Money Movement Solutions, Visa Europe. “The Nordics are a highly advanced but uniquely structured payments market, with local infrastructure and regulatory requirements that can be complex for companies looking to scale across the region. Through Moonrise, Visa Direct is able to combine its global reach with local capabilities, giving our clients the flexibility to operate at scale while maintaining the consistency and resilience of the Visa Direct platform.”

FF NEWS TAKE: This collaboration moves the needle significantly for European cross-border infrastructure. It showcases a powerful trend: established networks must partner with agile fintech infrastructure providers to maintain relevance in fragmented markets. We should watch how quickly Visa Direct onboards enterprise clients onto this consolidated Nordic gateway. The success of this single-API model will serve as a definitive template for how card networks approach other regionally complex markets, signaling a potential wave of similar acquisitions or partnerships across Europe.
