Data Reveals 41% Surge in Transaction Volume During UK’s Cheltenham Festival

New transaction data from the 2026 Cheltenham Festival has highlighted the growing technical demands on the UK’s payment infrastructure, as online sportsbooks managed a record £51.4 million in payins over the four-day event.

Across the event, 2.1 million inbound transactions were processed by these merchants as punters placed wagers on races, with transaction volumes rising 41% compared with the previous week.

The figures reflect activity across online UK sports betting operators using the BR-DGE platform and provide an important insight into wagering behaviour at the four-day racing festival.

Operators also had to support a large volume of payouts, with 316,000 withdrawals recorded across the four-day event at a combined value of £30 million.

Notably, the prestigious Gold Cup Day alone saw 534,000 betting transactions processed with an average deposit value of £30.

Average payment throughput across the event was recorded as 6.4 Transactions Per Second, (TPS) a 40% increase compared with the previous week. However, the average rose to 9.4 TPS between 1-7pm, showing a 50% increase week-on-week, with peaks on each day reaching as high as 34 TPS.

Over all four days, the most commonly used payment methods were Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay.

Commenting on the data, Jacob Spencer, CRO of BR-DGE, said: “Online betting operators perform at scale during major sporting events, when transaction volumes increase rapidly and payment performance is put under pressure. During Cheltenham Festival, when betting activity typically concentrates around race start times and peaks like the Gold Cup, it’s imperative that operators can handle those continuous waves of peak moments, without slowing or restricting transactions.”

During peak betting periods, payment systems must be able to handle large volumes of transactions, for both payins and payouts, while keeping card data secure. BR-DGE’s intelligent routing and tokenisation capabilities are vital in ensuring their merchants’ payments flow smoothly across multiple payment networks and providers.

BR-DGE’s growing presence within the gaming and betting sector is a reflection of operators’ increasing adoption of independent orchestration layers that support scale, maintain payment performance and reduce dependence on single providers.
