Nopan Becomes Principal Member of EPI to Accelerate Wero Acceptance Among Enterprise Merchants

WHY THIS MATTERS: The European payments landscape is undergoing a critical transition as stakeholders strive to create robust alternatives to legacy card schemes. At the heart of this evolution is the European Payments Initiative’s Wero, which aims to standardize digital wallet experiences across the continent. However, technical availability is only the first hurdle; the real challenge lies in performance. As account-to-account (A2A) payments move from niche P2P transactions to mainstream e-commerce, merchants are demanding the same levels of conversion and reliability they associate with established networks. This partnership underscores a pivotal shift where specialized performance platforms are no longer optional “nice-to-haves” but fundamental infrastructure requirements. By integrating deep-dive optimization expertise into the ecosystem, this collaboration highlights that the future of competitive A2A payments depends entirely on the ability to replicate—and eventually surpass—the operational standards of traditional banking rails, ultimately ensuring that new digital wallets deliver tangible business value at scale.

As Wero expands beyond peer-to-peer payments into e-commerce and evolves into a new generation European digital wallet, merchants are preparing to offer consumers richer account and wallet payment experiences.

To support this next phase of growth, Nopan, the performance platform for account and wallet payments, today announced that it has become a Principal Member of the European Payments Initiative (EPI), the organisation behind Wero.

The membership marks an important step in Nopan’s mission to help merchants unlock the full potential of account and wallet payments while supporting the continued expansion of Wero across Europe.

Already available to more than 55 million consumers across France, Germany and the Benelux region, Wero is continuing to grow its user base while expanding into e-commerce and, in the near future, introducing new capabilities such as recurring payments, subscription management, digital identity and additional wallet services. As these innovations become available, merchants are looking for solutions that enable them to deploy Wero efficiently and maximise customer adoption.

For merchants, adding a new payment method is not simply about offering more choice. Success is measured by the business outcomes it delivers. As account and wallet payments become increasingly important, merchants expect the same levels of conversion, customer experience, operational efficiency and reliability they have historically achieved with card payments.

Founded by former Netflix payment leaders, Nopan was created after its founders experienced first-hand the challenge of optimising emerging payment methods for one of the world’s largest digital subscription businesses. They recognised that merchants needed more than payment acceptance. They needed a specialist partner focused on performance.

By exclusively focusing on account and wallet payments, Nopan helps merchants evaluate, implement and optimise the payment experiences that deliver the highest performance.

As a Principal Member of EPI, Nopan will contribute merchant expertise and operational know-how to help accelerate Wero’s acceptance among enterprise merchants, enabling businesses to deliver measurable improvements in conversion, customer experience, operational efficiency, and revenue.

“Merchants do not adopt new payment methods simply because they exist. They adopt them when they improve customer experience and business performance. Wero represents an important milestone in the evolution of account and wallet payments in Europe. Our role is to help merchants implement and optimise Wero with the same level of sophistication, reliability, and performance they already expect from card payments. Having spent years scaling payment performance at Netflix, we know that success is never determined by payment acceptance alone. Success comes from continuous optimisation. Becoming a Principal Member of EPI allows us to bring that performance mindset to the next generation of European payment experiences”. Konstantin Surkov Co-Founder and CEO of Nopan

“Building a successful European payment ecosystem requires more than infrastructure. Strong partnerships are essential to bring innovative payment experiences to consumers and merchants across Europe. We are pleased to work with Nopan to help accelerate the adoption of Wero and make account and wallet payments simpler and more trusted.” Martina Weimert CEO of EPI

As Wero continues to expand across Europe, Nopan will help merchants launch, optimise, and scale Wero as part of their payment strategy, helping make account and wallet payments as easy to deploy and optimise as card payments.

FF NEWS TAKE: This move significantly elevates Wero’s value proposition by addressing the “performance gap” that often plagues new payment methods. It confirms that EPI is prioritizing merchant success over mere connectivity. For the industry, this signals that the war for digital wallet dominance will be won on technical reliability and conversion metrics. Watch to see if this performance-led approach successfully sways enterprise retailers to prioritize Wero over incumbent card processors in their checkout flows.
