Meet the ‘all-working mum’ Accountancy Firm
Shelley Pritchard is an accounts technician and soon-to-be shareholder of Pillow May, an accountancy firm set up by Jessica Pillow in 2009 out of a desire to balance her career with family life.
All nine staff at Pillow May are also mums who live and breathe the company’s motto: Think PINK:
Personal service, whilst
Inspiring and
Nurturing businesses and offering
Kinship to all clients and suppliers.
The company’s structure allows every member of the team to “have their cake and eat it too“, says Shelley, who joined the firm in 2014.
As a mum to two boys (10 and 11), Shelley values the freedom that comes from being able to use cloud-based accounting systems, such as FreeAgent, to work from anywhere, at any time. If one of her children is ill, for instance, she doesn’t have to stress about finding last-minute child care or missing any deadlines. She says she really values the support network of working with other people (all working mums) within an office environment but is able to easily work-from-home, too.
“I wanted to be part of a future-thinking accountancy practice. We use and embrace the latest technology and are growing rapidly as a company but at the same time, we’re achieving that all-elusive work/life balance – which can be particularly hard to strike as a working mum.
“I think if all firms had this level of flexibility, they’d see staff productivity sky-rocket. Rather than feeling stressed because I am unable to make an important school assembly due to a rigid 9 – 5 desk-job and pending deadlines, I can work around my family life. I am not locked down. This ensures I’m consistently delivering relatively stress-free, top-quality service to all our clients – just not always between traditional working hours.”
