RainSure Breaks New Ground: Insurance That Pays Out Starting at .01 Inches of Rain

Vortex Weather Insurance is pleased to introduce RainSureSM, the latest addition to the company’s line of parametric rain insurance products.

RainSure differs from Vortex’s existing rain insurance products by offering incremental payouts for every .01 inch of rain up to a .25-inch, .5-inch, or 1-inch threshold selected by the policyholder.

The biggest benefit of an escalator rain insurance policy like RainSure is that unlike traditional rain insurance policies, which only pay out when the rainfall amount meets or exceeds a certain threshold, a RainSure policyholder receives a payment for any recorded precipitation starting at .01 inches.

“RainSure helps protect your event from any amount of rain, even small amounts,” said Andy Klaus, lead weather index insurance producer for Vortex. “No more worrying about whether the rainfall that is creating losses will be enough to trigger a payout. If it’s just one one-hundredth of an inch, you get paid.”

The only parametric escalator rain product on the market, Vortex’s ground-breaking RainSure provides quick, easy payouts. The policy holder can choose from three different versions of the RainSure product, each with a progressive level of payout.

RainSure also provides unique protection for events that are more severely affected by heavier rain. For example, a light drizzle might not keep people away from an outdoor festival, thereby not making a significant impact on ticket and vendor sales. However, prolonged heavy rainfall could shut the event down, creating a much larger loss for the organizer. RainSure helps protect that organizer by offering a higher payout for more significant rainfall.

“RainSure offers our clients a new level of protection,” Klaus said. “In covering outdoor events, it’s known that the more rain that falls, the higher the losses. With RainSure, you can get coverage that recognizes that fact and pays out more as the amount of rain goes up.”

Rainfall amounts are measured through WeatherWorks, an independent third party. With more than 20 years of experience measuring rainfall, their methods provide accurate, local rainfall measurements. Anything WeatherWorks measures above a “trace” amount (.01 inch) triggers a payout on a RainSure policy.

Like all of Vortex’s parametric weather insurance policies, RainSure pays out once the thresholds are met. No inspection or proof of damage or loss needed. If the rainfall hits the policy thresholds, the policy holder receives a check.

“One of the best things about parametric weather insurance is that it doesn’t take long to get money into the policy-holder’s hands, and RainSure is no exception,” Klaus said. “Because the policy doesn’t require proof of loss to pay out, it’s a really simple process. Clients can ‘RainSure’ their outdoor events and receive a guaranteed claim for any measurable amount of rain.”
