Feather Launches Car Insurance for Expats in Europe

Berlin-based insurtech startup Feather today announced the launch of its Car Insurance offering, designed to simplify the process of contracting car insurance for expats in Europe. The fully digital solution brings car insurance into the twenty-first century: online, fast, and available in English – with coverage secured in under three minutes.

Feather’s new car insurance product is available in Spain, France, and Germany, three of Europe’s largest auto markets. By partnering with leading insurers including Allianz, Helvetia, and VHV, Feather has designed a product that makes every step of the customer journey seamless. From sign-up to policy management, everything is digital, jargon-free, and instant. Customers receive proof of insurance immediately after purchase and can manage their coverage fully online.

“Buying car insurance has traditionally been one of the most painful and bureaucratic processes for expats moving to Europe,” said Rob Schumacher, CEO and co-founder of Feather. “We built this product to remove that friction. In just three minutes, anyone can get reliable coverage in their own language, backed by trusted partners.”

He added: “The car insurance market is massive – and mandatory – but it hasn’t kept up with consumer expectations. People want speed, clarity, and transparency. That’s exactly what Feather delivers.”

Schumacher emphasised Feather’s expat-first approach: “We focus on a group that has been underserved for too long. Expats face complex systems, language barriers, and confusing local rules. Our digital-first platform solves those problems.”

“Launching car insurance is the natural next step in our mission to reinvent insurance for the modern age,” he concluded. “It expands our portfolio and strengthens our position as the go-to digital insurance provider for expats in Europe.”

Feather’s expansion into car insurance comes at a pivotal moment. The motor vehicle insurance market in Europe is projected to reach €175.69 billion in 2025, with an average per capita spend of over €208, according to Statista. By 2029, the market is expected to exceed €183 billion.

The sector represents the largest share of Europe’s property & casualty insurance, with premiums totaling €149 billion in 2020. Growth has since accelerated, driven by rising car sales, increased pricing, and consumer demand for digital-first services. By 2034, Europe’s motor insurance market is forecast to nearly double to $490 billion, growing at a CAGR of 6.8%.

Meanwhile, digital transformation is reshaping consumer expectations. The European digital insurance market is valued at $128 billion in 2024, with forecasts predicting 33.5% annual growth through 2030. Surveys confirm this trend: 46% of consumers now say digital is the “obvious way” to buy insurance, and 81% expect digital-first policies embedded in apps and websites.

Feather’s move into car insurance builds on a series of recent growth initiatives. In 2024, the company raised $6 million to accelerate its European expansion, and appointed Eloi Lanthiez and Jaime Sans Alvarez to oversee operations in France and Spain. Originally launched in Germany, Feather has since expanded across the continent, offering health, liability, business, and now car insurance – all tailored to the needs of expats.

With this launch, Feather continues its mission to make insurance in Europe simple, fast, and human-centered – removing the barriers that traditionally make the industry one of the most complex and frustrating to navigate.
