Future of cash parliamentary event held as two-thirds of Britons believe MPs are not doing enough to protect ATMs in their communities

The coalition of pro-cash allies will be attending the future of cash parliamentary event later today to speak with MPs about the access to cash crisis and the need for clear legislation ahead of the Queen’s speech in May.

Those from the pro-cash coalition attending the event include Cardtronics, the UK’s largest ATM provider, the Association of Convenience Stores, the Petrol Retailers Association, and the Financial Inclusion Centre.

This follows the latest Cardtronics research in the last three weeks which attracted over 1.5 million responses. The survey found that 68% of respondents believed MPs were not doing enough to save ATMs in their community.

Patricia Gibson SNP MP for North Ayrshire and Arran is sponsoring the event and so far over 60 other MPs from across the house have confirmed their attendance including:

  • Amanda Solloway

  • Toby Perkins, Shadow Apprenticeships Minister

  • Greg Knight

  • Emma Lewell Buck

  • Jo Gideon

  • Michelle Donelan, Gov Minister for HE and FE

The pro-cash allies have previously submitted a letter to the Treasury to express concern at the Access to Cash consultation which aimed to address the cash crisis caused by the reduction of ATMs on our high streets.

Marc Terry, International Managing Director at Cardtronics, said:

‘Our survey demonstrates the level of concern that UK consumers have in the lack of current legislation protecting their right to have access to cash. Cardtronics is attending the future of cash event to call on the government to bring forward legislation that safeguards the public’s right to choose how they want to pay and ensure that the underbanked are not left behind by those promoting the questionable benefits of a cashless society. We need the government to take action before it is too late.’

About the data

Over 1,536,105 respondents answered On-Screen Questions (OSQ) at Cardtronics cashpoint machines over three weeks during March across the UK. For the question: ‘Is your MP doing enough to save ATMs in your community?’, 322,173 respondents answered ‘No’ and 150,112 respondents answered ‘Yes’.
