Virgin Money & Turn2us Help Identify Over £58 Million Worth of Unclaimed Benefits

Virgin Money, in partnership with UK anti-poverty charity, Turn2us, has helped over 86,000 people access the Turn2us Benefits Calculator. People who completed a calculation on the Virgin Money website have identified £58 million in benefits support, unlocking vital extra income to help with the cost of living.

The Turn2us Benefits Calculator and Turn2us Grants Search tool, on the Virgin Money website, enable people to check their eligibility for welfare benefits and grants. For those individuals who completed a calculation and were eligible for new benefits, Turn2us estimates they could receive an extra £6,622 on average for the year.

The grants don’t affect welfare benefits and don’t need to be paid back, but finding and accessing them can sometimes be difficult and complicated. By following a few simple steps, users can check whether their personal or family’s circumstances, including current and previous occupations, living arrangements and health and wellbeing, could make them suitable for support.

According to a 2025 report1, the total amount of unclaimed benefits in the UK is now £24 billion a year. Virgin Money’s collaboration with Turn2us aims to address this issue by raising awareness about the importance of checking benefit eligibility, particularly when personal circumstances change.

In January this year, a customer sought assistance from staff in the Virgin Money Paisley branch with his bank statement due to eyesight problems that made reading and writing difficult. During the visit, he consented to recording his vulnerability and mentioned his struggles with budgeting on a low income. Despite receiving some charity support, his reading and writing difficulties remained unaddressed.

Using Virgin Money’s vulnerable customer toolkit, a colleague introduced the customer to the Turn2us Benefits Calculator on an iPad. Within 15 minutes of completing the application together, they discovered that the customer was eligible for both Pension Credit and Attendance Allowance. In March, the customer returned with a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions confirming he had been awarded both benefits at the highest rates, providing him with an additional £400 per month. The customer was overwhelmed at the difference this will make to his life and thanked the team at the Paisley branch for taking the time to support him “in a way that nobody else had previously.”

Raymond Pettitt, director of customer service and operations at Virgin Money, said: “It’s not always easy for people to find out which benefits and grants they might be entitled to, but by working with Turn2us to provide the calculator on our website we’ve made the task much simpler. More than 86,000 people have used the calculator, resulting in over £58 million being identified in benefits that people weren’t already receiving. We want to reach even more, and we encourage everyone who feels they need support to take a few minutes to check whether help is available for them.”

Sarah McLoughlin, Director of Programmes and Partnerships at Turn2us, said: “Our social security system should be there for all of us when we need it – yet millions miss out on the support they’re entitled to. By teaming up with Virgin Money, we’re helping people navigate a complex system and put more money in their pockets when budgets are under pressure. With our Benefits Calculator embedded on Virgin Money’s website, we’ve already unlocked over £58 million in unclaimed support for households across the UK – and we’re just getting started.”

This milestone demonstrates the positive impact of Virgin Money’s partnership with Turn2us and its commitment to supporting vulnerable customers.
