The National Bank of Serbia Publishes Regulatory Technical Standards and Extends PSD2 Compliance Deadline to January 1st, 2026

The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) has released its Regulatory Technical Standards (RTS) and extended the compliance deadline from May 6, 2025, to January 1, 2026. Salt Edge, a leading open banking solutions provider, and SAGA, Serbia’s top technology integrator, are working closely with local banks to help them efficiently navigate these changes while ensuring compliance and staying competitive.

Since entering the Serbian market last year, Salt Edge has been committed to supporting local financial institutions in adopting open banking. Its partnership with SAGA ensures that Serbian banks have access to both global expertise and local know-how needed to navigate the regulatory landscape with confidence.

With Salt Edge’s expertise in open banking and SAGA’s deep local integration capabilities, Serbian banks are well-equipped to stay compliant while strengthening their position in the market.

Salt Edge is dedicated to supporting Serbian financial institutions as they embrace the full potential of open banking. With the extended compliance deadlines, banks in the region now have the opportunity to prepare more thoroughly and ensure a smooth transition. Together with our partner, SAGA, we’re equipping them with the right tools and expertise to navigate these regulatory changes with confidence. By combining Salt Edge’s global experience with SAGA’s deep local knowledge, we’re empowering Serbian banks not only to meet compliance requirements but also to create open banking-powered financial products and services for their customers. –

Serbia’s introduction of RTS marks a significant step toward harmonising its legislative framework with European standards, while fostering technological progress, which enhances the country’s global competitiveness, and positions it as an attractive investment destination. These regulatory changes strengthen consumer protection, broaden financial service offerings, and reduce costs, while also laying the groundwork for the growth of new, innovative business models and services.

The extended compliance deadline gives Serbian financial institutions additional time to align with the new requirements, which will take effect on January 1, 2026. These include:

  • Provide Third-Party Service Providers (TPSPs) with secure access to customers account information through APIs;
  • Facilitate payment initiation services;
  • Ensure compliance with Open Banking standards to enhance competition, transparency, and consumer protection within the financial ecosystem.

The extension of the implementation deadline to January 2026 provides both space and an opportunity for the banking industry to prepare adequately and select the right partner in this market. The partnership with Salt Edge represents a significant step forward in enhancing the Serbian banking sector and by combining Salt Edge’s expertise in open banking solutions with our deep understanding of the local market, we are enabling banks not only to meet PSD2 compliance requirements, but also to create innovative services that enhance competitiveness and improve customer satisfaction. –
