Oh Crumbs! Zopa Bank Drives 10,240 Biscuits Through Central London to Show the Real Value of Switching as Santander Closes Its 123 Lite Account
Zopa Bank is calling on UK consumers to rethink their bank loyalty, urging them to compare current accounts and switch to providers that offer real value – not just crumbs.
To bring the message to life, Zopa created an eye-catching stunt for passers-by: 10,240 biscuits stacked in a huge box in central London, equivalent in value to the £256 customers can earn in a year from cashback and interest by switching to Zopa’s Biscuit account.*
The call to action comes as Santander closes its 123 Lite account this week, despite Zopa research finding more than half (51%) of customers surveyed are unaware of their accounts being deactivated.
Once a market leader, Santander’s 123 account has seen its value erode over time. From 21st August, 123 Lite customers will move to the Everyday account – offering no interest on balances or cashback and just £65 in annual value.**
In contrast, Zopa’s Biscuit account delivers nearly four times the value (£256) through a blend of 2.00% cashback on bills, 2.00% interest on balances, and a 7.10% market-leading regular savings rate — quickly becoming the UK’s best free current account for everyday use. ***
Launched to the public in June 2025 after an initial beta phase, it has already amassed 100,000 customers and has been recognised by MoneySavingExpert (MSE) in multiple Best Buy categories, setting a new benchmark for what customers should expect from their bank.
Merve Ferrero, Chief Strategy Officer at Zopa Bank, said: “We know that over a third of UK consumers stick with their bank out of habit, even when their loyalty goes unrewarded. At Zopa, we want to change that. With Biscuit, we’ve launched the UK’s best free current account for everyday value – combining the peace of mind of a fully regulated bank with the ease and value customers expect from a modern digital experience.
“Whether it’s cashback on bills, interest on savings, or effortless money management in one place, Biscuit makes everyday banking better. With 1.5 million Zopa customers already choosing Zopa, we’re excited to bring the Biscuit experience to millions of more Brits across the UK.”
New trends in banking behaviour emerging
Zopa’s Biscuit stunt follows research exposing a stark disconnect in British banking habits: nearly two thirds (58%) of people feel disappointed when their bank cuts rates or perks, yet 40% have never switched accounts – potentially missing out on hundreds of pounds each year.
While this inertia permeates all age groups, Gen Z are more willing to shop around for better deals with almost a quarter (23%) saying they plan to do so, compared to just 16% of 45-55-year-olds – indicating a stronger appetite for the best value.
Gen Z’s search for value drives them to seek quick, informal financial tips from AI and social media platforms. Many Gen Z (42%) are turning to AI and social platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, TikTok, Reddit, X and Instagram for financial advice, compared to just 30% of millennials, highlighting a generational shift in trust away from traditional sources and toward fast, informal and tech-led guidance.
Spending priorities for the £256 earned from Zopa differed by generation. Millennials would spend it on football tickets (22%), Ninja gadgets (15%) or Sky Sports/TNT subscription (11%). While football tickets remain a popular spend choice for 18-24s (13%), other choices are more trend led with Oasis tickets (10%) and Dubai-style chocolate (10%) featuring strongly.
It’s not just spending habits that set the generations apart—their expectations of banking services differ too. Only 6% of 18–24-year-olds see in-branch banking as a perk, making them the least likely age group to value access to a physical branch—compared with 16% of 45–55-year-olds.
Unlike many fintechs, Zopa holds a full UK banking license, meeting the same regulatory standards as traditional banks. Deposits are protected up to £85,000 by the FSCS.
One of the UK’s highest rated and most celebrated financial brands, Zopa has been recognised with over 10 British Bank Awards, holds a Trustpilot rating of 4.6/5, and has one of the highest customer satisfaction scores in the industry.
