Fintech Finance: The coolest cards of 2020

Whilst this year will be a year that will be hard to forget for many, the fintech industry has been awash with some of the most innovative and creative cards on the market. This year we’ve seen debit and credit cards that give back, some that are looking to help save the planet and some are just damn cool in their own right. Take a look below to see just a couple of our favourites from this year.

Treecard

TreeCard is a free eco-friendly debit card that is launching in 2021 that will channel profits from merchant transaction fees directly to tree planting in areas of the world threatened by deforestation. The company estimates that for every US $60 / £45 spent* with their new wooden debit card, TreeCard will be able to plant and care for a tree to ensure it survives beyond three years in an area threatened by deforestation and enables users to take meaningful climate action in their every day lives.

Ziglu

2020 has been a huge year for Ziglu, as not only did they raise a crowdfunding target of £1million in under 3 hours, they’ve also been busy making it easy to buy and sell cryptocurrencies seamlessly by harnessing the power of a pink debit card. The Ziglu card is also giving back this Christmas, as when you’re picking up your pigs in blankets, money is donated to FareShare so you’ll be helping the hungry every time you spend – regardless of the transaction size. Just £2 can provide five meals at a children’s breakfast club, while £10 provides food for 24 meals at a community café. Oh…and did we mention it also glows in the dark?

WeLab

WeLab debuted their portrait card design earlier this year with over 10,000 users applying to open an account within 10 days of launching. The numberless card helps prevents others from using your card number, CVV or expiry date without your permission. Fancy doing an online shop? You’ll be able to get all your card details securely from the WeLab app and spend with peace of mind, so you’ll be able to flaunt that fancy shimmer without worrying about having your card credentials compromised.

Razer

No your eyes aren’t deceiving you! This year, the UK based gaming lifestyle brand Razer created their very own Visa card under their fintech arm, that lights up when used for contactless payments with the aim of expanding “digital payments access to youth and millennials”. While we’re more surprised it doesn’t shoot laser beams when paying for all your necessities in life, we know for sure that with its distinctive design this card won’t be getting lost in our card h0lder any time soon.

Monzo

Metal cards were all the rage in 2020, with the likes of Monzo launching a sleek 16g card made of steel, alongside a whole host of Premium features. Not only is there a long list of Premium features, by having a Monzo Premium account, you’ll be able to insure mobile phones worth up to £2,000 as well as accessories under £300 are covered too, so theres no worries if you’ve dropped your beloved AirPods down the toilet. What’s more is that there’s AXA Travel insurance for when we all, eventually, start travelling again.

BELLA

Launching a a first-of-its-kind compassionate banking service that puts people before profits, BELLA is sharing the love with its early customers by putting up to $1M of its marketing budget towards surprise real-time cash back events during its first four weeks on the market. An account with BELLA will give users access to a checking account, unlimited savings accounts, and its rainbow (!) nbkc bank Visa Debit Card. And if the rainbow part of the card design doesn’t make you just a little bit excited, then surely this will; as all of the BELLA debit cards are made with recycled ocean plastic which we hope is pointing towards a future where the plastics to make cards are sustainably sourced.
