EX-ING Banker to be the New CEO of MOX

Hong Kong virtual bank Mox has hired a former ING banker as its chief executive.

Barbaros Uygun, the former head of Retail at ING in Turkey joins Mox as CEO, according to a statement, consequent to Deniz Güven.

Güven will step down as Mox CEO and executive director of the board, effective September 27, to pursue a new business venture but will remain to continue out his role as a special adviser to Standard Chartered on a number of important digital initiatives.

Uygun will take over and start his new role, effective as of 1 March, subject to regulatory approval, and will transfer an immense amount of banking knowledge and retail experience to ING in Australia.

Though it should be noted that Güven has made a colossal contribution, ‘building Mox from the ground up’, according to Mox chairman Mary Huen.

Huen further divulges, ‘Under his leadership, Mox has secured our virtual banking licence, launched multiple innovative services, won the heart share of over 170,000 customers and become one of the highest-rated financial apps in Hong Kong’

It is fairly safe to say that Güven’s impact on the FinTech world has been duly noted and Uygun may have some big FinTech boots to fill. However, Uygun’s 24 years  of banking experience across business management and strategy, digital transformations and marketing put Uygun in good stead to do some brilliant things and further transform Mox, after all he transformed ING from a simple savings-focused bank to a full service digital bank.

It shall be exciting to see, not only what the future holds for Mox but also for Uygun himself.
