BBA appoints first female chair

Noreen Doyle has today been appointed as the new BBA Chair.

She is the first woman to chair the BBA and the first to come from the wholesale banking side of the membership. The appointment takes effect from 17th October, 2015.

Ms Doyle is currently Chair of the Board of Credit Suisse International and Credit Suisse Securities (Europe) Ltd, and Vice Chair of Credit Suisse Group. Her banking career has spanned both sides of the Atlantic, working with Bankers Trust in the U.S. and across Central & Eastern Europe as First Vice President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

In this latter role, she worked closely with governments and regulators to develop the banking system in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union in order to promote lending to the emerging SME sector. Her understanding of the needs of challenger banks as well as small business in the UK will be relevant to many BBA members.

Her roles as chair of a leading investment bank in the UK and vice-chair of Credit Suisse Group in Switzerland have given her experience with key regulatory and legislative issues in the UK and Europe. In addition, her non-executive roles in industry have equipped her with a very broad understanding of the multitude of issues faced daily by British business outside of the financial services industry.

She will succeed current Chairman, Sir Nigel Wicks, who has served as BBA Chairman for the last three years, and who has played a major role in reforming the organisation and in leading major change in the industry.

Commenting on Ms Doyle’s appointment, BBA Chief Executive Anthony Browne said:

“I am delighted that Noreen has agreed to become the new Chair of the British Bankers’ Association. She brings a wealth of experience to the role which will help our industry navigate the challenges ahead.

“I would also like to thank Sir Nigel Wicks for his tireless work on behalf of the industry, much of which went above and beyond what was asked of him. He has been a consistent advocate of change and he will leave the BBA and the banking industry in a much better place than when he arrived in 2012.

“I look forward to working with Noreen as we take the BBA forward and strive to provide a world class service to the UK’s leading export industry.”

Commenting on her appointment, Noreen Doyle said:

“This is a time of great challenge but also great opportunity for the British banking industry, so I am honoured to be appointed as the new BBA Chair.

“Rebuilding the trust of customers, driving up standards in the industry and working with government and regulators to ensure our banks remain globally competitive are some of the issues I look forward to working on with Anthony Browne and his team.”
