G+D Netcetera’s Dr. Thomas Fromherz on Seamless Card Payments with Passkey Authentication
At Money20/20 Asia, Dr. Thomas Fromherz from G+D Netcetera gave a live demo on how passkeys can make card payments easier and safer. His job involves helping to launch new products and build strong relationships with clients, and this session focused on passkey authentication, which is a hot topic in digital payments right now.
He kicked things off by showing how someone can enroll a card in a banking app. Using a demo, he walked through the steps where a user just clicks “create passkeys.” Then a prompt appears to get the user’s OK, and is followed by a biometric check like a fingerprint scan.
Once the user is verified, a public-private key pair is created. The private key stays safe on the device, while the public one goes to the bank’s FIDO server to finish setting up. Next, he switched to an online shopping scenario and after adding a book to the cart and choosing to pay by card, the system kicked in with a 3D Secure step.
The Access Control Server sent a challenge to the shopper, but instead of a password or code, it asks for the same fingerprint scan used earlier. With a quick touch, the user is verified, and the purchase has been accepted. Dr. Fromherz pointed out that this method not only speeds things up for customers but also boosts security for banks and stores.
