Contact Centres’ Greatest Strength Could Be Fraud Weakness | Davies Group | Smartnumbers Consortium 2024

We’re back with another great interview from the Smartnumbers Consortium 2024, where professionals in the fight against fraud gathered to discuss their approaches to this threat.

Here Gareth Evans from Davies Group points out that contact centres are most vulnerable because it is the job of staff to be helpful! In an effort to answer callers queries it’s possible they could unwittingly give away sensitive information. Find out more in this video.

The weak link in contact centres

In this insightful interview Evans, who is Global Head of Fraud at Davies Group, shared his expectations and concerns regarding the current state of fraud prevention, particularly within contact centres. He goes on to emphasise the importance of collaboration with other industry leaders and customers to gather feedback and innovative ideas that could be applied to future opportunities within the field. This is something we’ve looked at in other videos in this series.

Contact centres and call centres are prime targets for fraudsters primarily because of the vast amount of sensitive information they manage. As others at the event have pointed out, Evans agrees that contact centre staff, despite their best intentions, represent the “weakest link” in the security chain. He goes on to explain how this vulnerability stems from the inherent nature of call centre workers, who are trained to be helpful and responsive to customer inquiries. He’s been there too. Drawing from his own experience of working in one, he explained that in their efforts to assist customers, employees may inadvertently reveal critical information that fraudsters can later exploit.

It’s another interview that underlines the critical need for enhanced security measures and awareness training within contact centres to mitigate the risks associated with human error in the face of increasingly sophisticated fraud tactics.
