Alan Chan | Chief Executive Officer of Lazada Malaysia | Fintech Finance
Alan Chan, Not young enough to be called a Digital Native, nor old enough to be classified as an Analogue Veteran, Alan Chan describes himself as a "Digital Hybrid" (a term he coined), someone who knows enough about traditional enterprises but with an early transition into digital businesses. After completing his military stint as an Infantry Platoon Commander, he majored in Economics & Statistics at the National University of Singapore and thereafter started his consulting career with Accenture. Alan Chan utilizes data science to help companies unlock opportunities in customer conversion and marketing optimization. In 2010, wanderlust drove him to relocate from Singapore to Beijing, where he invented a series of performance-based commercial models for their China consulting business. He was then made the youngest Accenture Partner in Asia. They excelled in the realms of data science, e-commerce, and marketing ops, helping companies transform into digital businesses. His consulting portfolio then was US$50m (=CNY 300m) annually, and they had an amazing team of close to 100 consultants, data scientists, and tech engineers. After more than a decade of consulting with Accenture, Alan Chan joined Alibaba Group in 2016 where he had an insightful view into the China Digital Commerce ecosystem, understanding how marketplaces bring hypergrowth but must be balanced with governance, and how economic theories can be applied to business policies. He started with a role in Taobao Merchant Policy and later led the TMALL Platform Governance, both strategic roles that used data science to drive better merchant engagement and ultimately a healthier assortment. “Change is the only constant” is how they say it at Alibaba. In 2018, he moved internally to Lazada, a very exciting Southeast Asian eCommerce company acquired by Alibaba. His mission was to build the capabilities of Cybersecurity, Trust & Safety in Lazada, and to reimagine how they can build the biggest and also the safest digital marketplace. He is currently the Chief Risk Officer for the Lazada Group where their army of data scientists, cybersecurity professionals, technologists, operation specialists, and policymakers work relentlessly to build Lazada into the most trusted and safe platform for all their customers. Outside of work, Alan Chan invests, speaks, and mentors actively. Besides being on the Global Advisory Board for EcoImpact Capital VC, he mentors young talents to prepare them (and himself!) for the ever-changing world.
