University of Nicosia becomes Hyperledger Associate Member

The Institute For the Future (IFF) at the University of Nicosia (UNIC) has now joined Hyperledger, the multi-project open source collaborative effort hosted by the Linux Foundation, created to advance cross-industry blockchain technologies. More specifically, IFF|UNIC was invited to become a Hyperledger Associate Member in recognition of its ongoing work and plans for future contribution to the Hyperledger community, joining like-minded notable blockchain-oriented organisations and big industry players like IBM, Intel and SAP.

IFF|UNIC has been actively involved in the Hyperledger community in the past year, contributing to the global collaboration’s wider efforts even before formally coming on board as an Associate Member. Such contributions include incorporating reference to new developments on Hyperledger Frameworks in UNIC’s free introductory MOOC on Digital Currencies, which was followed by 3,102 students this past year alone (and offered to over 35,000 students to date), and adding a new module in its MSc in Digital Currency focusing on Enterprise Blockchains and specific use cases based on Hyperledger Frameworks. Additionally, IFF’s technical team is currently working on an EU-funded project that aims to provide a decentralized social media network using Hyperledger Fabric.

Commenting on the development, Professor George Giaglis, General Director of IFF|UNIC, highlighted the collaborative approach inherent in the effort, which ties in well with the Institute’s work and aims. “We look forward to advancing the emerging blockchain technologies and contributing to their effective application in industry, government and education, along with like-minded, fellow Associate Members of the Hyperledger family”, remarked Professor Giaglis.

“In the immediate future, IFF|UNIC will be focused on developing Hyperledger professional training content and organising relevant events”, continued Professor Giaglis. It is worth noting that, in that vein, Europe’s premier blockchain conference, DECENTRALIZED 2019, organised by the University of Nicosia in Athens, Greece, between 30 October and 1 November, will be allocating space for a full-dayHyperledger Fabric Workshop on site.

With the above, the University of Nicosia looks forward to continuing its active contribution to (and within) the Hyperledger community, while tangibly helping to further expand the exciting and diverse Hyperledger ecosystem.
