SumUp Appoints Luke Griffiths As UK CEO To Lead Next Phase Of Growth

Global fintech SumUp has today announced that current Chief Commercial Officer Luke Griffiths has been appointed UK CEO. London-based Griffiths will now lead SumUp’s UK operations, continuing his successful tenure in a pivotal leadership role, alongside his global CCO duties.

Since joining SumUp in October 2023, Griffiths has played a crucial role in scaling the company’s multi-product offering and expanding its global footprint. Under his leadership, SumUp recently launched the SumUp Terminal, its most powerful handheld payment device to date, and developed new strategies that have strengthened its market position. Identifying field sales as a key growth driver in the UK, under Griffiths SumUp have assembled a sales team of 150 strong, acquiring over 1000+ new customers every month, using AI across almost 50% of deals in order to maximise prospect targeting and merchant onboarding.

In a company first, SumUp has also launched its proprietary in-app call feature for UK merchants, enhancing the customer service experience for merchants. Developed fully in-house by SumUp, in-app call enables a highly-secure way for SumUp merchants to talk to an agent over the phone, all without needing to leave the application. It works seamlessly with the AI assistant, which triages all requests ensuring that users are routed to the best agent for the topic at hand. After the initial launch the feature has received positive feedback, improving customer satisfaction score by 15%.

SumUp CCO and newly appointed UK CEO Luke Griffiths: “I am incredibly excited to expand my role at SumUp during this transformative period. We’ve already made significant strides this year, launching cutting-edge products like the SumUp Terminal and Bookings, and securing partnerships with major venues such as the O2 Arena. As UK CEO, I am committed to unlocking fresh growth opportunities, particularly in enterprise and hospitality, while continuing to serve our valued existing merchants with market-leading solutions.”

Griffiths will oversee SumUp’s strategic expansion into new verticals and champion the rollout of an ever-broader product ecosystem designed to empower merchants of all sizes. Griffiths’ appointment notably signals SumUp’s accelerated focus on the UK hospitality and enterprise sectors. Such a move evolves SumUp beyond its established base of SMEs and nano-merchants, providing robust payment and business solutions for larger venues and a broader range of enterprises.

Before joining SumUp in 2023, Griffiths served as Klarna’s Group Chief Commercial Officer, where he was instrumental in driving Klarna’s expansion, initially establishing them as a brand in the UK, and later globally over a seven-year tenure. Luke also spent six years with eBay, where he led the Marketing Solutions division for EMEA and APAC.

SumUp Co-Founder Marc-Alexander Christ: “Luke brings invaluable experience and a clear strategic vision that is critical for SumUp’s next chapter. Having worked closely with him as CCO, I have no doubt his focus will deliver exceptional results for our UK market. His deep understanding of merchants’ needs will be pivotal as the business landscape continues to evolve. We are transitioning to serve an even more diverse range of merchants, and Luke will be key to our continued UK success. We also extend our sincere gratitude to outgoing UK CEO Luke Beavon for his significant contributions and leadership over the past two years.”

Steve Delpy, formerly part of SumUp’s European leadership team and experienced operator with spells at JP Morgan, American Express, and Visa, has rejoined the company as a Non-Executive Director.
